Would it surprise you to learn that Earth Day began as a protest? Back in 1969, a Wisconsin senator named Gaylord Nelson wanted to help raise awareness about air and water pollution. He partnered with a young activist named Denis Hayes to organize events that would educate college students and the greater public about these climate issues. On April 22, 1970, about 20 million people gathered in various places across the United States to protest against pollution and raise awareness about ways to protect the environment.
