what a marvelous performance by Christian Bale and truly a thriller masterpiece
.
The last time I had the pleasure to watch Victorian era supernatural murder mystery was Sleepy Hollow (1999). So it's really been a long time. Not many movies have the courage to do this kind of genre. Although this movie was way softer and down to earth compares to Sleepy Hollow, but it still has its eery moments. And here we also have the honour to meet young Edgar Allan Poe (Harry Melling), as a cadet in West Point. He befriended our protagonist Augustus Landor (Christian Bale) in order to solve mysterious and eery murder cases, that somehow led to occultism and dark magic. Of course, like other murder stories, you'll have to wait until the last 5 minutes to really understand what's going on. But rest assured, you will sit there until the end. Worth watching 8/10.
