A movie of sorts depicting the drug habits and the death of American trumpeteer Chet Baker. Unnecessary movie that rarely touched on his earlier years but instead the whole movie was centred around his heroin use, and his woman beating. It was depressing from start to finish with grotesquely close up scenes of faces worn by bad living. Amongst it was a police detective trying to discover how Mr Baker met his end and in the process looked into himself and his own demise. Nonsensical scenes that did not connect in any way to the supposed plot of the life of Chet. Really awful movie
A romantizing fragment of an itinerant, heroine addicted random musician who got lucky with fame but couldn't keep his hands of his girlfriend. Set in Amsterdam (obviously a studio) with all the cliches you can think of. Red lights, dirty alleys, dark cafes, filty streets, drug dealers and most of it filmed at night. Wallpaper movie. The way the actor who plays his manager speaks about Chet, as if he was some kind of god, are cringing and corny. "Notes and rythm find a way to the secret places of the soul" This movie is being too philosophical and poetic about music for my taste. No artist is god and most of them are creative people who only can speak out their emotions only with their instrument but are social screw ups. Perfect movie for none musical yuppies who compensate their own lack of knowledge and experience in music by wordbarfing. Yuk. Also, the police guy has no purpose in the movie just like the hooker. Overrated movie.
I gave it 2 stars only because the music was great as it was the acting. But the plot, connections between characters, how the "action" develops made it hard to follow and not get bored. There was no need to put in a movie all messages about drug addiction, gender violence, self-destruction, genius unable to discover true love, etc. with no real action between them, a documentary would have been sufficient (and made the issue more real). I am not surprised women voted high because of the punishment and awareness supposedly raised by the movie. I usually try to understand and give higher grades to the movies but this one (like Mother) is clearly overrated.
