I Am Richard Pryor tells the story of the legendary performer and iconic social satirist, who transcended race and social barriers by delivering his honest irreverent and biting humor to America's stages and living rooms until his death at 65. Featuring an iconic comedic cast, historians, activists and artists who provide a unique brushstroke into the complex world of Pryor. The film dives deeply into the psyche of a comedic genius whose mother was a prostitute, father a pimp, and grandmother a madam. Pryor dispensed a penetrating comedic view of African American life - essentially comedy without jokes - that struck a chord with audiences of every ethnic, social and economic disposition.

Richard Pryor's genius is not in dispute. He lived a tragic life with so many highs (no pun intended) and lows throughout his entire life. He burned out (again no pun intended) well before his time and although his childhood was not like (1972 TV series) The Waltons family as he was raised in a brothel and respected only his grandmother, the man had an unlimited amount of comedic talent and he used his early childhood experiences as well as his drug addicted adult life experiences to keep the audiences coming back for more Richard Pryor life experiences. We laughed while he secretly cried inside. Much like the talented Smokey Robinson's hit song "The Tears of a Clown" Richard Pryor made us all laugh based on his hardships and real life experiences. Richard Pryor was a womanizer and when talking to reporters and/or his audience he told it like it really was. This documentary is a fair representation of who Richard Pryor was as a great comedian, a troubled youth, and a drug addicted adult with wealth and talent to spare. I liked the film and I rate it a better than average 9 out of 10 IMDb rating.

I Am Richard Pryor's only redeeming quality is Richard Pryor. The film is a glossy tabloid pretending to offer deep insights. There are some interviews from professional peers and even a few from people that didn't know him, except for his ex-wife or widow. It's not a bad documentary. It's just a wasted opportunity.

I am Richard Pryor was well-received during its world premiere at Austin's SXSW Film Festival. The film paints a powerful picture of a transformative comic figure. Through footage of his performances and interviews with his friends and colleagues it presents a full picture of Pryor's dark and troubled life. It starts with his deeply troubled and traumatic childhood and shows how those events surely shaped his life which included both his genius and also his aberrant destructive behavior including his heavy drug use. His talent and his comedic influence as both a purveyor and a shaper of the complex times in which he lived are examined. The film is well-constructed as it covers the arc of his career which went through a number of stages as both a comic and actor. Fans of his work and students of comedy will greatly enjoy this film.

To do a really good film about Richard Pryor, one of my favorite comedians, all you really need is footage of his comedy and a few explanations. This film gives us endless chatter and only a few glimpses at his actual performances. Even worse, a lot of the chatter is repetitive, and some of the speakers offer nothing at all. What a waste.

From the start it makes itself clear that it's going to be serious and dramatic...and it's Richard Pryor, a comedic legend. He had a troubled life, everyone that's a fan knows it. But, I guess I was thinking that they were going to cover the good parts of his life, I thought they were going to cover more of the comedy. It was depressing and, well, you see a name like Richard Pryor and you expect to laugh and instead it makes you cry. That's not how I want to remember him, and honestly, I don't think that's how he would want to be remembered.

Amazing person, life and story, but this isn't a good documentary. There's far too much inane babble and far too little from the man himself. It's all, "then Richard did this" and "then Richard did this" and "then this happened to Richard". The guy's life is such an amazing story, it's disappointing this documentary is, quite frankly, boring. I hope a different production manages both to capture the essence of Mr. Pryor and entertain the audience because this one does not.
