2199 AD. Yamato tries to leave behind the Large Magellanic Cloud galaxy after receiving a Cosmo Reverse System at its destination, Iscandar. However, suddenly it encounters a mysterious group at the edge of the Large Magellanic Cloud. The crew finds out that the group is called the Gatlantis, and that its leader is the Gutaba expeditionary force commander who calls himself Goran Dagam of Thunder. The commander demands that Yamato be handed over to him. Yamato, wanting to hurry to Earth, escapes the fray. However, Yamato is attacked by a devastating beam weapon called the Flame Direct Attack Cannon that can transcend space. Yamato is able to retreat, but ends up getting lost and finds itself in a strangely colored irregular dimension. The crew decides to turn off the ship's engine and explore a mysterious planet. In order to collect information Kodai, Kiryuu, Sawamura, Niimi and Aihara land on the planet. What they see when they arrive is a ship that's not supposed to be there. Dagam chases after the traces of Yamato's warp, and also reaches the strangely colored space. The planet where the crew of Yamato landed is in fact what Dagam has been looking for all along.

If not for the fact that some plot point don't make any sense at all. Even well knowing in advance that we're talking of a Fantasy/Sci-fi Space Opera so you can't expect hardcore logic to apply here. The annoying voice of the new member of the Yamato Crew (reminiscent of your stereotypical ecchi/* girl) at the start of the movie doesn't help either, but luckily as the runtime goes on her timbre changes accordingly. And what's up with the god-fearing phrases? I don't remember the praising of any kind of god in the 2199 series...
A perfect tie-in between SBY 2199 and SBY 2202. This movie adds a whole new dimension into the relationship between the crew of the Yamato and Gamilas. It also moves the story of Gatlantis into a more believable arc. Thus far the whole 2199-2202 SBY series has been better than the 1970s original series. Enjoying this Space Opera very much.
I first discovered the original Yamato series as Starblazers in 1979 and I've been a fan since. The recent remake of the original series was spectacular so when I got this from Amazon - I was thrilled. Until I watched it. Only the horrible live action movie is worse than this. A horrible mish mosh of unrelated ideas, it's an attempt to force a story out of the Yamato's journey home after the defeat of Dessler. Unfortunately the story they went with - no spoilers - is dull and partially a repeat of better ideas from the original series. In the end this is quite dull and really just a badly done movie. Watch the originals and save yourself a headache.
