Age of the Dragons

Summary: The movie was bad. Don't watch it unless you really are desperate. Details: This is a steampunk version of Moby Dick where they follow the dragons in a huge wagon across snow covered mountains to chase and lance dragons. People love to complain about the special effects in SyFy channel movies. I found it adequate, better than older Science Fiction classics like Forbidden Planet. The acting was not great but that wasn't what killed the movie. It was the script. It was horrible, rank even by SyFy channel's low standards. You don't need a huge budget to make a wonderful Science Fiction movie if you have a good script. The Man From Earth is an outstanding example. A cast of eleven and no special effects, yet it was marvelous. This had a comparatively huge budget with costumes, sets, scenes, special effects explosions, everything except a decent script. We all know that SyFy loves to inflict bad movies on its audience. Why it only chooses such rank scripts, I have no idea. But this one should have been rejected even by them. You can't take a classic story that has been done so well by so many and just do a plot less, trash version without being laughed at.

A poor dragon tale based on Moby Dick. At first I was intrigued by the title, it sounded like it could be something and I began watching it with hope.Big mistake... The acting was horrible,I don't even find words to describe how bad it was. The whole movie was painful , the only thing that was fair in it was the dragon effects but it disappointed there to, i would expect a lot more damage from a 3 stories tall beast.And I think the script was took straight from the book, no editing , no nothing. It hurt my brain while I was watching it, so spare yourself the pain and don't watch this movie. I hope this year will bring more quality movies from now on because if more movies like this one will be produced I will refuse to watch another movie again...and you should do the same

This adaption of Moby Dick was terrible! I love SciFi and watched the whole thing anyway. Basically, it's dragons in stead of whales and a white dragon in stead of a white whale. It features a crazy land-ship that's bigger on the inside than it is on the outside; it sleeps eight people in separate quarters, kitchen/dining/storage and office in a vehicle the size of a bus. Propulsion of the ship left me scratching my head too - no sails, no horses pulling it, no steam engine, it just rolls on wooden wheels in an age of harpoons and cross bows - I didn't get it. The effects were reasonably good. I liked most of the actors. But the premise, story line and dialog were so bad that it took down the entire movie to a (1) "awful".

For the past 20 years, the worst movie I had ever seen was White Fang (6.5 stars on IMDb? Seriously?). As of last night, I now have a NEW worst movie. I rated this movie a 2 only because the visuals were decent. The movie was horrible otherwise. I figured Danny Glover wouldn't be in anything with this terrible of a script, but maybe he was trying to stretch his acting chops or something. Well, stretch he did...way overly intense on his lines. Seemed like he was trying to summon some sort of stage actor vibe, which didn't work well on screen. The girl was one of the worst in the movie. Looked like she had about a half inch of makeup on and really heavy lipstick, which made her look out of place in this time period. Her acting was OK at times, but other times I literally laughed. "When this reacts with air, it WILL explode..." Oh, boy... All in all, the movie was junk. I rented it on redbox for $1. Wish I could get that $1 back. ;)

catered only 10 minutes watching this "movie" to realize that they had completely tainted the novel Moby Dick. Oh God, Mr. Melville must kick in his grave every time this "movie" is projected or seen or even mentioned. It is truly remarkable that Hollywood screenwriters, are empty minded completely out of ideas, and every day the only thing that matters is to put one or two fairly known actors, some cgi some muscular guy and a hot girl in a "movie" to assure the investment. The era of smart movies with meaning, with a moral lesson has ended, I am 42 years old, and I must say that my generation was the last which saw a movie with sense.

I don't understand all the hate and the 1/10 for this movie. Sure it won't be my movie of the year, or i can't say i was amaze by it, but i was sure entertained. The special effect are better than what i expected for a movie i came across randomly without any theatre release. The chicks is hot and i like her character just like Ishmael. People complain about the acting, maybe its cause i watched the movie in french(dubbed) but it was very correct, nothing to complain on this... Basically i watched this at late night whitout expecting much and i was entertain and liked it. I saw way worse movie with bigger budget, and even winning Oscars...(ahem... hurtlocker...)

I'd like to say there are spoilers in this review, but that would be a bit like writing a review of Titanic and wondering whether you should mention the ship sinks. In other words...bloody obvious to everyone. So with this latest SyFy (I'll never get used to that spelling without giggling at the idiocy of it) effort it will come as little surprise to anyone familiar with their movie outings that it is beyond awful. For a start it seemed like it might be a valiant attempt by SyFy to do something worthwhile. Retell Moby Dick with a fantasy setting as a backdrop and make the whale into a dragon. Cast Dany Glover and Vinnie Jones and make it, for SyFy at least, halfway respectable. However, once the novelty of Hermann Melville's classic transposed to fantasy wears off, the viewer is left hunting for things that make the effort of sitting and continuing to watch worthwhile. Sadly, the only thing that made this possible for me was the presence of Vinnie Jones. Now, Vinnie is hardly what you'd call an accomplished actor. With his accent, looks and rep he's limited to thuggish hard man roles. At least SyFy didn't try to play him against type and here, as in his other similar roles, he carries off the role quite well. No awards, but his enthusiasm is infectious and it kept me watching. At least, right up until his character perished. After that, it becomes painfully obvious that the rest of the cast, including Glover, have about as much chance of carrying the film as a paper bag has of carrying water. And, like the metaphorical bag, the movie becomes a soggy mess that falls apart very quickly. Beyond dear Vinnie's character's demise, the movie quickly becomes stale and dull. It becomes a chore to watch the rest of it. The acting is wooden, apart from Glover, who mugs atrociously and seems intent on playing Ahab as an Alzheimer's sufferer. But the rest are no better. As for the effects, they are about as convincing as you might expect for the SyFy channel, which is to say, grimace-inducing. Is it only me that yearns for the good old days of stop-motion animation? But even the CGI dragons have more acting talent than some of the cast. All in all not a very good movie. In fact pretty awful. A nice premise ruined by bad acting, shoddy effects, lack of money and most of all, lack of people who care about what they are doing.

I'm used to seeing Syfy originals with fluffy script, pedantic acting, unimaginative imagery, and plastic feel. Age of the Dragons, in my opinion, is in the top tier, and arguably the best Syfy original I've ever seen. Plot lines and character development are mature. The script is intellectual, most of the acting matches feature-film levels, and the CG effects are solidly believable. Danny Glover is excellent. Sofia Pernas is eye-grabbing. Atmosphere flows convincingly. Morphing Moby Dick into a dragon hunt really worked for me. The only thing which wasn't explained is how the land boat was powered. Still, that's a small complaint. I enjoyed this fantasy film, it was worth my time.
