Iv really tried to get into this award winning film yet my word it's drawn out cliche after cliche , the main protagonist seems to have women literally dying to be with him & he's not that appealing The sexism is moronic, a gorgeous neighbour throwing herself at the men in the house . He has a Beautiful intelligent wife on top of it all is it meant to be that he is this irresistible man of the year because I can't see it is it also trying to say is it is his imagination beyond reality it's just really dull I've tried it again and this is the second trying viewing and sorry I hate to give up on films but not for me.
The basic story of the movie is really good, couple move into haunted house.....he has had a stalker.....overbearing neighbour.......troubled writer, etc, etc. John Magaro is excellent as the writer, the interplay between the dreams and real life is good enough and the direction leans heavily on Hitchcock, Giallo and, at times, Kubrick for inspiration. However the issues come with the execution. The wife of our 'protagonist' is terrible. Absolutely no chemistry with her husband (she may get on well with the furniture as she is that wooden). Several scenes seem to have been created without consideration to the rest of the movie. The wife is angry one minute and cheerful the next, the angry neighbour is angry, errrr.......because? And the pacing is so off it feels like a waltz.....slow, slow, quick quick slow.
What a boring film... I understand that in the 21st century you CANNOT film anything scary or fill it with a creepy meaning, horror films are either about nothing, or nightmares of liberals about Trump supporters coming to power, or tons of violence, but absolutely empty and meaningless. This film falls into the first two categories. An interracial couple moves into a new home. They chatter endlessly, they focus our attention on the fact that the main character smokes marijuana and... that's all. The quintessence of all horrors is the heroine's headache and her HUSBAND'S CHEATING WITH A WHITE GIRL. All. That's all this movie was about. Somewhere out there, sad letters are read to you, something flashes by purely for show, but the main horror is betrayal. Horror movies aren't what they used to be.
💯
No pun intended - this really goes deep diving into quite a few cliches. One of them being the coming and staying in a house that had quite a lot of problems and issues. There is some horror history or rather past to it ... I do wonder if the people going into this should not reconsider. But they act like every other horror family heading to their doom ... or are they? Well you have to watch the movie to find out of course. I thought the movie did a few clever things. You may know where it is heading and maybe can even guess a major twist - but even if you do I feel the movie is strong enough to work on its merits. It is not superb or awesome or whatever ... but it is more than decent ... especially if you are into horror movies. Acting is also quite nice to say the least.
