I'll admit, I put this on thinking it was a another Netflix stand up comedy special, looking for a laugh, and not having heard of the Broadway show. Instead it left me with a wet face - not from tears of laughter. I'm white, but that didn't make this any less pertinent or profound. I always liked John Leguizamo but after watching this he's my favourite new person. It also worth watching his Tony acceptance speech, which left me in tears also. In this crazy messed up world it's comforting to know that there are voices out there like Leguizamo's. I related to him as a parent trying to do the best one can by his children, and as someone with great love for America even with it's F'd up history (and present). Do yourself a favour and watch this.
I spent more time in my cell phone looking into his "facts" than I did actually listening to his story about his family. This show is more about his son and his stereotypical views of several cultures than of Latin American History.
I'm not quite sure why there are all these people saying this was "awkward". If you want a history lesson you can watch a history show or read a book. John provides an entertaining take on the history of Latin Americans. It's a mixture of comedy and dramatic interpretation. In contrast to your standard punchline stand-up comedian shows on Netflix, this was a welcomed break from the norm. It's a one-man play and was quite entertaining. There's no doubt that it's artistic interpretation and in it he exposes the challenges he faces as a parent and his frustration/obsession with the maligned history Latin Americans have been given. Yes, you can read Howard Zinn's classic book, and I highly recommend it. But if you prefer dramatic interpretation, this was an entertaining approach!
John Leguizamo is huge comedic talent who made this show a blast. Enjoyed every minute, funny and stimulating at the same time.
Awesome stand up, entertaining, original and very informative,
Used to be a hugh Leguizamo fan prior to him becoming a lib political activist. After his continued bashing of European history and his own fictional version of history, still continue to dislike him. As much as he proclaims the population of Central and South American countries as well as the Caribbean countries were just if not more advanced than the Europeans of the 14th and 15th Centuries, he is mightily wrong. Unfortunately, human beings, regardless of origin, are violent and aggressive animals (mammals). Don't recall the historian who said "those who win the battle, write the history." Many, many battles since the beginning of time depict one region attacking and defeating another region in the historical growth of the modern world. As much as Leguizamo attacks American history and doesn't hide his contempt for "whiteness," he sure takes advantage of his wealth, made in the US, by placing his kids in private schools, living in white communities and like all hypocritical Leftists, does little to support his "people."
Filled with facts and history with only his comedic gifts!! One of the best things I've watched in a long time!! This is a this generation must!
I'm a fan of the actor and comedian, but this show does has not have accurate facts or accounts of history, moreover, it's distorts history and it's relevent characters.
