Climbing as a sport is pretty new. 1963 was when the first American climbed Mt. Everest. This won't give you the chills and excitement that some of the documentaries about modern climbers will give you, but it will give you a similar perspective on what drives climbers of every generation. This is mostly a story of a man, not a story about climbing.
Fred Beckly expressed he did not like to be called a dirtbag. Another title would have been more respectful to him. Although, I know climbers are often called Dirtbags. That being said, this was a great tribute to a very important historical alpinist. I don't climb mountains but for some reason I have always been attracted to it. I really liked the way his story was told. I feel the filmmakers did an exceptional job putting together decades of climbing of this prolific climber. They were able to express to the viewer how Fred lived and thought about the world he lived in. Great job guys! Great tribute film!
I saw saw Free Solo, and it was really good. This is kinda different. I'm not sure how to review this movie. Watch it, and take the ride. They play it straight, and I think it hits the mark.
Wasn't expecting much from this movie, but WOW. Gotta watch this movie. One of the best climbing movies ever!
* steals other peoples women * whole purpose in life is to climb * leaves people who climb with him to die * cant finish a sentence without the F word.
