LAST MAN FISHING is a cinematic look at the vastly changing seafood system through the lens of small-scale fishermen across the United States. Narrated by best-selling author Mark Bittman, the film explores the dichotomy between the industrial model and sustainable fishing methods that focus on conservation and quality. Among the fishermen profiled is renegade New Englander Tim Rider, whose dream of supporting his family as a fisherman is met with numerous challenges. His story parallels that of Darius Kasperzak, a jig boat fisherman in Kodiak, Alaska, who seeks to build infrastructure for a struggling small boat fleet.

Know your fisher-person; know your fish! This film shows us individuals working hard to provide us with sustainable delicious seafood, competing against corporate fleets that destroy the seabed and put locals out of work for cheap labor abroad. The cinematography is beautiful, and the multiple heroes in the film are inspiring. I've already contacted a couple of the direct-to-consumer Community Supported Fisheries (CSFs, like CSAs for farm produce), to get their seafood! You'll probably want to do the same, after watching this moving portrayal. The narrator, famous food writer Mark Bittman, adds vocal gravitas...

This film details how big companies and the global food chain are crippling fish stocks and hurting fishermen. The movie does a powerful job at the life of fishermen and the fight they go through to keep a living and bring fish to area restaurants. At the end of this film, you will have be fired up to support local fish procurement! Except to never look at fisheries the same way!
