This is one of 2018's best! Great story and script filled with intense dialog giving actors top notch game even for short screen time. Nearly perfect combo of camera work and editing keeps us thrilled and moved from start to finish. Bravo Melanie Laurent!!!
Superbly scripted and acted, equally well shot, for me this movie surprised and intensified throughout, despite that there was no novel subject matter in it per se. It takes aspects of a variety of fairly common and well-explored themes (crime, betrayal, abuse, futility, rescue, flight, and then risk and the possibility of redemption) but it handles them carefully, without excess exposition, and with an exquisite, light-handed attention to small details. The soundtrack, especially the lyrics of the many mostly plaintive background songs, are worth a re-listen in their own right and, for me, they constantly subliminally reinforced the work of both the actors and the filmmakers. Best film I've seen in a while.
This movies supports what most of us already know. A good trailer does not always mean a good movie and a couple of good actors do not as well. It had some good moments but they were few and far between. Disappointing !
Ignore the pretensious cellar dweller nerds pontificating about so called layers and deep meaning in this utter bore of a slog. Absolutely nothing of interest or entertaining happens. The acting is good but it's nowhere near enough. The trailer is incredibly deceiving tricking you into thinking it's a thriller. Zero thrills, zero layers, zero story, zero movie. Stay away and be spared.
The entire movie was dark...... no great story line...like a jumble of nothingness......didn't make since....we just know it took place in Galveston... Dumb don't wast an hour an a half
The movie starts with what seems like a very straight-forward plot. Violent criminal alcoholic seeks redemption through helping a 19 year old beauty who has been a victim of a lot of terrible circumstances. Typically this movie would end with some kind of gun fight, the criminal finding redemption in his last selfless act that simultaneously frees the 19 year old girl from any retribution and redeems the criminal. This is not what happens. I don't want to spoil it, but while the beginning sets up a solid pace for the traditional story line to play out, it ends with a brutally heavy and poignant variation on the theme. The acting from Elle and Foster is superb, and supporting characters, slim though their roles may be, do a fine job. I can see why some people didn't like the slow pace, but just realize the pacing is setting you up for an emotional sucker punch to the gut. Any more action and in-your-face plot development would take away from something that's meant to be dark, moody, and maybe, just maybe, a touch redemptive.
