The American remake of "Death at a Funeral" is one of the rare instances of the remake being better than the original. The story, and for the most part, the script is the same. The thing that makes the new version so much better is the cast. Chris Rock, Martin Lawrence, and Tracy Morgan make a great comedy team and none of them have ever made a better film. The rest of the large cast is excellent and the dialog was quick and witty. Danny Glover almost steals the movie as the cantankerous uncle. Like the original, there is a lot of dark humor. Not all of the laughs are the type where you laugh out loud, but I found the entire film enjoyable. I can only guess that the low rating and poor reviews are from people who really loved the original. I didn't really care for the original and I was surprised at how good the new version was. Whether or not you have seen the original, I recommend seeing the new version of "Death at a Funeral."
Flipping thru channels so watched this edited, but plenty of laugh out loud moments. I didn't know it was a remake, but done great. You can have a black leading cast comedy without Medea showing up in drag
I forgot how good this movie was. Watched again this week and it makes the others, including the original, look like an after school special! All those with low reviews must not have any REAL sense of humor!
This movie is hilarious, I haven't watched the 07 version but I don't even feel the need too. It's comedy not some oscar nominated drama movie. Watch the movie, if you don't like it watch something else. Simple as that. It's absolutely hilarious tho, trust me.
So the script is not that original but this movie is worth watching just because of all the stars who are much bigger now than back then. Too bad the writing didn't deliver the quality that these actors deserved. Still the movie was very entertaining and warrants a second look.
I made a big mistake by watching this version just a day before I then viewed the original, and the truth is that this is a totally unnecessary movie. When African-American comedy is placed beside British humour, the Americans are found wanting. Black comedy with its crass jokes and oftentimes outlandish mannerisms seems to fall flat when placed side by side with the subtleness that makes British comedy always standout. I'm sure the major reason why this remake was done was because those involved were enthralled by original; but I guess if it was this version that was made first, no one would have bothered to remake it. Can anyone please answer: Why was this film ever made?
