Mantooth vs. Pulver at CarJitsu Championship! Subscribe for more CarJitsu. CarJitsu is a unique and rapidly growing combat sport that takes traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and constrains it within the claustrophobic confines of a standard five-seater automobile. Created as a way to test submission grappling skills in a hyper-realistic, real-world self-defense environment, the sport forces competitors to adapt their techniques to a highly restrictive space. Instead of a wide-open mat, athletes must contend with steering wheels, gear shifts, headrests, dashboard consoles, and seatbelts. The rules are straightforward but intense: two competitors start strapped into the driver and passenger seats, and once the referee signals the start, they must use leverage, pressure, and tight submission holds to force a tap-out, using the car's interior geometry to their tactical advantage. The strategy in CarJitsu shifts dramatically away from the open-space guard passing and sweeping found in traditional martial arts. Space is the ultimate premium, making heavy top control, brutal isometric pressure, and precise limb isolation absolutely essential. Competitors frequently utilize the seatbelts for choke variants, use the window glass and roof to trap an opponent’s posture, or leverage the center console to secure a dominant position. Traditional escapes are heavily modified because there is simply nowhere to roll, forcing athletes to become incredibly creative with their frames, underhooks, and guard retention. A typical match consists of two rounds—one starting from the driver's side and one from the passenger's side—to ensure competitive fairness, with a potential third round in the back seat if a tiebreaker is required.
