Three Colors: Blue

And the premise was intriguing. Only repertory cinema don't sit well with me. I find it silly pretentious and weirdly funny. With directors names impossible to pronounce, or spell. And the weird shots that are supposed to mean something (?) And awkward dialogues. The way actors deliver lines is apathetic. As though they were reading a teleprompter. Everything about this movie is anything but. At least to me it was. I had a good time laughing at it outpouring of pathos, though. Distracting and loud noises, the piano slamming down the heroine's face, old people bungee jumping on TV, these random fades with violons, and so on...

The film "Blue" is very blue. Dark blue in fact. A lot of questions were brought up in the film and none were answered and thats what makes this interesting and well made film aggravating. It is a film to be admired but the open holes make it hard to embrace. The one thing that cannot be denied is the terrific performance by Juliette Binoche. Even in a film that is hard to handle is watchable because of her. And this is a very good performance by her. Her character Julie is interesting as we watch her separate herself from her past and most of the outside world. But then she is slowly dragged back in. This film seems to be overrated by some critics and underrated by others. Its a very good film and an excellent performance, but those holes keep it from being more than that.

One is destine to see the plot for this and think that it's yet again one of those very slow, artsy foreign films. And hey, they may not be wrong, but this is a pretty good film (not as great as the reviews say though). I liked Binoche in it, but I somehow wish another actress could have taken the role and done even more soulful and deeper stuff with her performances. In a way, it seems like a wasted opportunity. There are some truly dazzling and visually amazing shots here, the cinematography really does give the film that murkiness of the pace and of what the director is trying to get across. Overall, I recommend this, although it's not perfect.

In fact, this is my favorite movie of the series. Every scene of the movie is like blue. The subject is also very interesting. The acting is tremendous. It's a damn good movie.

Krzysztof Kieslowski's first in the "Three Colors" trilogy, "Bleu" (1993), is a masterpiece in illustrating the complex aspects of grief, in both visually and tecnically sophisticated ways. Juliette Binoche is nothing short of amazing in her role as the grief-stricken Julie, who in a matter of seconds loses all she loves. The plot of the film revolves around the events following the car crash that killed her husband and daughter. Visually, it is a deeply impressive film, often drawing on storytelling in mere cinematography. The sets are wonderful. The script is convincing. All in all, it is a masterful depiction og grief from the perspective of the Julie, the sole survivor in the family. Highly recommended.

In my opinion, the finest of the Three Colors films, Blue is an abstract sojourn into pure emotion. Often when I think of this film, I forget that it had words - I think it could have just as easily been silent. I can hardly think of a film more affecting... it infused me with so many feelings that I could scarcely think of anything but the movie for several hours after having seen it for the first time. Kind of like the feeling you get when you realize that you are in love... Kieslowski is a master!
