They thought Yi Long was an untouchable Shaolin legend. Then Muay Thai hit back. For years, Yi Long built one of the most recognizable images in Chinese combat sports. The bald “Shaolin Monk” became famous for standing with his hands low, absorbing punches, and showcasing his legendary “Iron Head.” But eventually, the spectacle had to face reality. In 2016, Yi Long faced Buakaw Banchamek for the second time. Although Yi Long was officially awarded the decision, the fight sparked widespread debate and criticism over the result. His reputation began to change. Then came the Yi Long Challenge Tournament. Eight fighters entered. Only one would earn the right to face Yi Long. That fighter was Sitthichai Sitsongpeenong. What happened next was brutal. Sitthichai's Muay Thai quickly overwhelmed Yi Long, eventually finishing him with a devastating kick that left the Shaolin fighter unable to continue. But the story wasn't over. After disappearing for months, Yi Long returned in June 2018. Waiting for him was another Muay Thai veteran: Saiyok Pumpanmuang. A former Lumpinee Stadium champion with more than 200 professional fights. And this time, there was no controversy. With less than a minute remaining in the opening round, Saiyok landed a brutal head kick followed by a crushing right hand. Yi Long went down. The referee stopped the fight. And the myth of the “Iron Head” suffered its most devastating collapse yet. This is the story of how a legendary image collided with the unforgiving reality of elite combat sports.
