Hayao Miyazaki can do no wrong, with yet another great flick. This movie has a great voice performances both original japanese and english dub. I wikk admit that only the protagonists englisb cast sound amazing and for some reason, I found the antagonist acting pretty dull. It is an overall visually appealing film with one of the best soundtracks by studio ghibli. A decent story, well told.
As with any other Studio Ghibli film, this film is visually stunning, I don't know how you can 2D animate something like a dogfight with 7 planes all swopping and twirling and still have it look realistic? I'm in awe of their skills. In terms of story, it's pretty solid. It's a light-hearted funny film and it excels at this, a great bit of viewing with children or for anyone who appreciates animation. 7/10
Rather slight and unfocused, but predictably beautifully mounted Miyazaki anime with a wonderful sense of time and space. It's as if a thirties Michael Curtiz or Howard Hawks action-drama had been filtered through Japanese perceptions. The pre WWII Mediterranean setting is a pleasure to behold as well as all the moving character depictions. Unfortunately, the storyline's strangely haphazard and neither as thoroughly entertaining nor as contemplative as the master's best work. Still, the aerial fights and some insightful moments compensate for the weak spots... and a lesser Miyazaki pic is still miles ahead of most animated movies. 7 out of 10 silly Americans
A must see for anyone who likes classic action-adventure or Studio Ghibli. Before seeing it, I wasn't sure how much I would like a film with a pig as the star. But once the movie started, I didn't even think twice about it. This film has a different, more mature feel to it than other Studio Ghibli movies (and obviously not from the PG rating.) It's romantic without being mushy, and is laugh out-loud funny. Plus, it has positive female role models (come to think of it, a lot of the Ghibli films are girl-power flicks.) Fun for the whole family. I'm glad I just saw it so I don't have to wait long for the sequel coming out in 2012 (20 years after the first.)
I don't understand some of the comments saying this film is a little disappointing, I loved it. You can see the passion and creativity stemmed from Hayao miyazaki's love of planes and aviation as a theme in his movies. Nods to his father perhaps as well with personal references and I belive there was so much more meaning behind scenes like the Aircraft heaven and the ending. It's not a deep fantasy movie like alot of the others - it's just a different kind of film. The animation as per usual is beautiful, the Ghibli engine was such a lovely touch. I wish it was longer, the ending caught me off guard but that's what I part of the charm of a Ghibli movie the plot doesn't go where you think it always will. Mellow and poetic in places, it felt aimed at an older audience and the character of Porco was complex but it really worked.
Verry nice! Loved this film, it was a funny film, made me happy. The animation and characters where great. But it was not deep enough to make an impression, although it was better than your run of the mill. It is not the kind of film you feel you want to see again. But it was well worth a watch.
