Amazing movie. The dance scenes were incredible and the vocals were incredible! The story is very inspirational! The all of the music is great! Santa Fe is such a beautiful song. It's all about wanting to be somewhere where you're not lonely! Seize the Day has a great message that makes you want to get up and change the world! King of New York is so cool! It's one that makes you want to get up and dance. Alan Menken's work, I think, is better than his work on The Little Mermaid. I absolutely loved this movie! This is one of Disney's greatest! Christian Bale is incredible. I thought David Moscow played a great also. I really enjoyed the characters. They had lots of personality. I loved the wise-cracking newsie Racetrack.
Newsies what can I say,Yes it didn't make big blockbuster bucks, and it didn,t do well for its time!Well if it would have been released today It would have done I think much betterI I saw this movie when it came out at on video and was hooked and I was just lucky enough to get it on DVD just the other day!I sat and watched it again and I sing with every song!A Newsboy strike in 1899 kids standing up for what they believe in and showing that kids can make a difference! Some people cannot or will not like this movie because of it being a musical, but I think the music is strong and wrote by the great Alan Meeken who wrote music for little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast! The acting is good and you can tell that they are having fun! This movie isn't for all but I say give it a try who knows You might like it. I am 29 years old and still can watch this show many more times and will probably wear my DVD out!So try it you might like it!Have fun and Seize the Day!!!!!
Don't waste your time! Who is the mental genius that came up with this one? Based on New York's paper boy strike just prior to the turn of the century, the filmmakers pretty up the squalor these boys lived in and make it seem fun and cheery. Although, it is a Disney effort so what else can be expected? As lame as this film was (and why Robert Duvall chose to stick his name on it eludes me) the music has its moments. Alan Menken, better known for his work in "The Little Mermaid, "Aladdin, and the Oscar winning "Beauty and the Beast", does some good work here. But I can't recommend this, even for young children. The only part worth checking out can be found on the CD.
Ya know, Christian Bale didn't like this role/film much. However, this "fansie" can sing-a-long to every song and quote many lines. There are tons of surprisingly familiar faces in this show, although not the actors playing the newsies. Keep an eye out! I saw this in theaters back in 1992, pleaded to my marching band director in 1998 to do our routine to it. She wound up moving to a rival school and they did it! (Very bitter, 20+yrs on. LOL) I saw the musical, unimpressed. But here I sit watching Newsies 30yrs after release via DisneyPlus.
For one not being a fan of musicals this really is a great movie, it tells a little bit of history while being a fun film to watch, good story great acting and songs, amazing cast, just a fun family movie thats actually good, very underlooked. 7.5/10.
It's surprising how boring this often is. But more surprising is that the non musical portions are so disconnected from the musical portions that I kept forgetting it's a musical. Duvall's Pulitzer doesn't even get a song. It also seems like it would have been a far better movie if it were straight up drama instead of a musical. The only thing that's really notable here is when it was made. The songs mostly sound alike, and NYC is so obviously a backlot set that I have to assume that was intentional. UPDATE: ha ha, I did not know this was originally a drama that was converted into a musical. No wonder it felt like that.
I did not discover "Newsies" until my senior year in high school but it remains to this day one of my favorite movie musicals. The movie appeals to audiences both young and old and also gave us our first glimpses at such actors as Christian Bale (American Pysco, Batman Begins)and Bill Pullman (Independence Day). Being a fan of old school musicals such as "Guys and Dolls" and "The Music Man" I was skeptical that a film made in 1992 about news boys would be any good but my friends insisted (and rightly so)and the film still ranks as one of my favorites. The songs will stick in your head long after you have finished the film and you will be wishing you had seen it on the big screen. I recommend this film to children of all ages and anyone who loves good old fun movie musicals.
It is based on a true story. Newsboy that young newspapers sellers struck in NY 1899. Because they were exploited by their bosses, they struck against big publishing titan. Christian Bale was young at that time and his acting was great!
