Dana Carvey's performance as a private eye who forgets everything he learns by morning is truly exceptional. Clean Slate is an underrated movie that deserved a lot better recognition than it got! This movie was funnier than all the performances Dana did on Saturday Night Live combined. In this one, Dana Carvey plays Maurice Pogue, a private eye who must remember every little thing about a crime he is investigating. He teams up with a woman who helps him along the way. Clean Slate is a roller coaster ride of a comedy. Every situation our hero gets into will keep you wanting for more. Another good thing about this movie is that it never seemed to run out of any sight gags like in some comedies of nowadays. It had an array of colorful characters, a well-written plot, surreal sight gags, and it's just plain fun for anyone who is a fan of Dana Carvey. Wayne and Garth? Who are they, anyway? Want to have some good clean fun? Then Clean Slate is the one! It's Dana Carvey at his best! I give it 5 stars!

Judging from the scenes shown on Siskel & Ebert's review of this movie, this looked promising. Boy, was I mislead. Unlike 'Groundhog Day', Dana Carvey's character is not reliving time, but rather a poor memory, or more accurately, a lack of memory. There are funny moments few and far between, but mostly this is a lackluster effort. Basically, Dana Carvey is just being Dana Carvey. This plot lives completely down to its potential. It could have gone in a lot of funny directions. Instead we get this stuff about gangsters, and a pointless romance between the main characters, all of which go nowhere. There is one funny scene, which follows a trial. That's about as funny as the picture gets. ** out of ****
Dana Carvey, the hugely popular TV comedian, had established himself as a film star with his hilarious portrayal of Garth in the films "Wayne's World" and "Wayne's World 2." The success of those films was enough to give him the starring lead in this 1994 MGM release. Unfortunately, this film doesn't make good use of Carvey's comedic talents at all and reduces his character to a needless sight gag. Those who were really disappointed with Carvey's last film, "The Master Of Disguise" will be even more so with this one.
This movie is definitely an above-average comedy. The premise is not very funny, but the situations that the main character are put into are hysterical. Whatever it was, it was certainly original, and certainly funny. The slide presentation is one of my favorite parts from any movie I've seen.
A very pleasant aura was made with this film- partly because you can feel the 90's Los Angeles just wash you out...and of course the story, range of characters and Dana Carveys comedic naturalism as his character- which was an interesting choice since he's more of a stand up/ sketch comedy kind of guy (especially during this time) BUT it seemed so easy to him. The significance of this movie is its subtle, simple, comedic moments; I'm so used to movies trying to press something onto us that this was an easy experience that left a lax-full, "clean-slate" energy AND AGAIN Dana carvey is just a solid spirit who mended together some classic scenes. Technically speaking I loved the coloration on this picture and the pleasant scoring. Both those enhanced the view of this easy Los Angeles setting- A Harmonious LA. A special time-stamped piece/peace*
This is the film that really showcases Dana Carvey's talent for comedic acting. I picked it up in a closing down sale at a local video store - I loved the Wayne's World movies and it had also been recommended by a friend. I was not disappointed. This movie has plenty to keep the audience entertained, and our main character never fails to surprise us with his innovation. This film had me in stitches from start to finish. If your not that inclined to go for Dana Carvey, at least remember this review when you're lingering in the video store and can't decide what to get. You won't be disappointed.
Since it didn't affect the overall storyline, I'm rating it decently, though not as high as a 7 because of it. If the dog's blind in one eye, he would have a depth perception problem, not a problem of seeing an object off to the side of where it actually is. Other than that, I really like this one.
