L'auberge espagnole

This movie is full of cute people. I like that. I can imagine things getting much crazier with a bunch of students out for fun in Barcelona, but this movie is supposed to be a quick entertainment with some feelings in the formula, and that's OK. Thanks to everyone involved, for I've had some good laughs.

So we saw this on DVD at our apartment here in Paris. We're all here on an exchange program. We all laughed so hard cuz so much of what was going on in the movie happened to us! I mean yeah sure some of it was pretty clichéd but still true, know what I'm saying. I think I related more to the quiet guy (the Italian) than Xavier because I'm more of the observer in our group. Anyway, I wish I had a hot roommate like Cecile de France. She seems like a cool chick in the movie and for real, after I saw her hosting the Cannes Festival last month. Now I'm thinking I wanna go to Barcelona next summer after seeing this movie. I gotta check out the sequel too which just came out here in France.

I saw this with my 18 year old daughter. It made us both want to be foreign exchange students! What a wonderful job they did of capturing the feel of being in a new place, making new friends from all over the world, and experiencing the camaraderie that develops. We both thoroughly enjoyed this movie!

As a former Erasmus student I enjoyed this film very much. It was so realistic and funny. It really picked up the spirit that exists among Erasmus students. I hope, many other students will follow this experience, too. However, I wonder if this movie is all that interesting to watch for people with no international experience. But at least one of my friends who has never gone on Erasmus also enjoyed it very much. I give it 9 out of 10.

For the whole movie the fact that was going on my mind is this- "Wish I was there". What a place filled with students of various countries of Europe. The transition between student to work life is nicely shown and did I mention the humor .The director had convinced the viewers that Love and friendship has no language or culture barriers esp. in youths. May be the problem with my attitude, but I dread the way the young girls are shown in a bad way. Apart from few minor clichés and the camera's super-speed in the start scenes (which IMHO is needless)the movie is good to watch. A guy like me who haven't experienced a scenario like this,guess watching the movie may be the next best thing.

L'Auberge Espagnole (all the other titles and translation don't really work) is an important film for the whole European culture, the first one that analyses the phenomenon of Erasmus, which was quite new at the time. The characters are enough developed, the young actors seemed to have fun doing it, and you have a good immersion in the atmosphere of Barcelona, with its meltin' pot, troubles at University with Catalan speaking teachers, etc. If there is a fault, is the typical 'French' way of portraying stereotypes of any foreign characters; we got the French main character, obviously the 'cool' one, and all the others, the almost dumb Italian guy, the nearly hysterical Spanish girl, the stubborn German guy and so on. This is a common thing in French films, overly nationalistic in most cases, and makes this particular film not fully enjoyable at times. Beside that, it's a memorable film for whoever has had an Erasmus gap-year or has just travelled a bit. Just DO NOT watch it dubbed.

L'Auberge Espagnole is full of energy, and it's honest, realistic, and refreshing. Not a comedy or drama but more a slice of life movie about this particular group of very interesting but still normal young people who share an apartment in Barcelona for one year. Beautifully photographed with a nice soundtrack. If you're older, this movie should bring back a flood of good memories. If you're young, learn by this example.

A rather charming depiction of European union beginning to operate among the young generation as representatives of that group learn to live together in an apartment in Barcelona, where they are all studying on international fellowships. Central to the story is Xavier ( Romain Duris),who may have lived a rather conventional life with his mother in France, but who quickly becomes a leader in the group, helping them deal with landlords and other problems. He learns about life and love rapidly. Duris has a wholesome appearance and gives a fine performance. The rest of the cast also play well. Occasionally they all lapse into English when they want to make sure they are communicating,uncertain about all their apartment mates' ability to understand French or Danish or whatever the languages may be. Cinematography noteworthy including fine views of Barcelona and its famed Gaudi towers.

If I was to vote for creative and imaginative content, it'd get a 0/10. Comedy content? 0/10 Actor's performance? 0/10 This film has been one of my most painful disappointments as I'm quite a fan of Klapisch until he starts to write his own films. If he had any dignity, he would never have allowed to have this piece of 'caca' (French word for pooh) released. Was he even here during the script writing? If you have experiences of multi-cultural flat sharing, this film will make you wonder how on earth it's possible to come out with such a plate of tasteless plot, bland characters when there are so many things that could be written about. The lead actor is about as interesting as a toilet brush and rapidly becomes despicable/irritating as the rest of the lot (the insipid girlfriend and married woman). You come out of that film wondering what is was all about. Absolute waste of time.
