If you're a male, or maybe a female, this movie has Charlize Theron never looking more beautiful. Frankly, 'nuf said. But wait, there's more. There's the wonderfully created creature, Might Joe Young, who will take you on a fantastic tour of iconic Los Angeles locations, from the Hollywood Sign to the Santa Monica Pier. There's the wonderful link between past and present, because this film was made partly under the auspices of RKO, the company that made the original Mighty Joe Young. And there's the predictable arc of Mighty Joe Young's sympathetic actions throughout the course of the film. If I have one criticism, it's that events near the end of the film are a little too violent for the younger set. Did I mention Charlize Theron?
This is a pretty good kids' movie. It also brought a tear to this adult's eye at the end. There's no character development or dialogue to speak of. And the beginning is so corny and Disney/Hollywood hyperbolic that I thought I would gag and have to walk out. But then it became kind of like Black Beauty, and you had to root for the cute animal with deep, dark eyes. I did, anyway.
Good special effects compliments of Rick Baker. Predictable but very enjoyable. Got a little intense at times for my seven year old, but all in all, a great movie to take the family to see.
I saw this movie with my 7 years young daughter, and contrary to some other critics, (the professional ones) thought that it was a pretty good one.
A great job with Mighty Joe. The story line was more for children than that of adults but it was o.k. I did like the way it ended. It didn't end with a sad tearful feeling. It was upbeat and warming. I suggest take the whole family to see it. It would be a very good evening for you all. Thank you. P.S. Charlize Theron is a beautiful lady
I just recently took my little cousin to Mighty Joe Young and I was enchanted by this movie. I loved the original when I was a kid and I love this one even more. Charlize and Bill are great. The special effects are absolutely amazing in every scene. The movie also has a good message about endangered species. A great film for all ages.
Disney has taken their typical spin on things by making this a family-oriented watered-down action film. It is important not to look at this as a remake, because, truly, it isn't. It does stand well on its own, though, and is an exciting, non-gory action flick, with some wonderful scenes, and cute one-liners. Even the ape gets in a few good shots, and the realism created by the combination of animatronic special effects, and CGI, truly lend to the overall suspension of disbelief. Though it will never be on par with King Kong, it does make a fine solid film.
The Computer Graphics on this film are AMAZING--perfectly complimenting Rick Bakers magnificent Oscar worthy performance. Kudos to Animation Director Larry Whitiker!
