Rita, Sue and Bob Too

It's not Hugh Grant in some over priced London suburb falling in love with hilarious results, It's not angry young men fighting against an unfair class system, it's not about forbidden homosexual partnerships or a mixing of Indian and British culture. This film shows a snap shot of British working class life as it was (and still is in many cases!). The British film industry's Liberal Elite hate this kind of movie as it attempts to show real people. Not every working class person has a chip on there shoulder! It's packed full of swearing and sex and even a little bit of violence. If you are easily offended don't watch, but if you fancy a realistic Brit flick that doesn't have Hugh Grant in it, then see this.

I love this movie. The characters are grim and there is a certain tragic feel for both Rita & Sue that their upbringing has set them on this path. Bob is spectacularly acted and has no redeeming qualities whatsoever, yet you find you self drawn to him in a way that makes you question your own moral compass. The setting in northern 80's England is great, the real locations make this film so much better. Funny yes, cringing most definitely but one of my favourite British films. Watch it now.

A movie that has not lost any of it's excellence since it was first produced 15 or more years ago. The opening scene of Willie Ross as Sue's father walking home from the pub drunk is hilarious and sets the tone of the whole film. I have to give maximum credit to Willie Ross the actor, as I have never seen a drunk played so perfectly by any other actor - you will believe he really is permanently drunk. It's a film that can be watched many times over as you will miss some great lines and acting nuances each time. For instance; During the street argument Sue's father calls Rita a slag and Bob takes his coat off to face down Sue's dad. But, he can't look Sue's father in the eye as his head is bobbing around too much because he is drunk. It only lasts a few seconds but Bob is trying to follow the fathers eyes to stare him out and can't. -hilarious! The film is full of these moments. It's gritty and sad and wonderful in equal measure.

Love it or loathe it, this is an audacious and startling account of working class life during Thatcher's reign in 80s Bradford, North England. Focusing on an illicit menage a trois(which, ironically, the film never explores in any way from a legal perspective) between two schoolgirls and a married-man, the film is a roller-coaster ride of emotions and explosive situations, brought about by the stellar acting from an excellent cast who give their hearts to this low-budget production. Everything is spot-on - from the naff songs to the hideous fashion. Despite its 80s feel, it is still as funny as it was some twenty years ago. The only problem for viewers of a fainter heart is the lack of morality displayed by any characters - but that in itself is a comment on the degradation caused to the working class by years of ruinous Thatcherite policy.

Having been a horny schoolgirl myself, I have to say this is by far the most realistic portrayal of young female sexuality I've ever seen--the giggly, impulsive distractability by which the unchaperoned, unrepressed young maiden may be let spectacularly astray, given the right man, place and time. It's also an uncommonly LIBERATED depiction of girlsex, in which the only visible bare flesh is male, and it's the sixteen-year-olds, not their thirtysomething seducer, who call the shots, or should we say "jumps." Demanding, hilarious, wild yet ultimately sensible, Susan and Rita may have been poorly served by society and the family. But like the cocky strippers in "The Full Monty," they demonstrate that Britain is equipped to survive, if only in the Darwinian sense.

This was a fantastic film. I love these UK films which really portray life in the UK. Grimy and dark yet funny. The language used is wonderful and really makes you feel like your there. A true representation of how people actually speak! And not a single PC conscious moment. Perfect.
