Joshua Beal, a student at a prestigious Catholic School, is having a tough 5th-grade year as his beloved grandfather dies, in addition to the other difficulties of being small in school. He decides to go on a search for God, and wakes up to the world around him as a result. This is a pleasant, mild-mannered movie that wants to convey a very important message. It's probably an excellent film for children in some ways, but in fact there is not really a great deal in Joshua's very sheltered world that he can wake up too. The ending is a surprise, mostly because it seems relatively unnecessary! I would have to say that it actually detracts from what seems to be the film's real point, cleverly delivered as a class presentation in the 3rd-to-last scene. The final scene lacks the subtlety that would have reinforced, rather than overwhelmed, the idea of being wide awake. I would recommend this to anyone as a family film, but I can't help but feel that the themes it touches on could have been more artfully handled.

I came upon this movie purely by accident when it was being shown on cable, and found myself riveted to my seat, not wanting to miss a minute of it. The performance by Joseph Cross was captivating, but what was even more compelling was the story itself. I was constantly trying to figure out how it was going to end. The ending turned out to be a real surprise, but I was also impressed by the portrayal of boyhood that the audience receives in the process of getting there. It was so true to life that I found myself wondering how much of it was based on the film writer's own experiences. Above all, I was impressed by the amount of respect the movie seems to have for boys, and by its willingness to recognize that 5th graders sometimes think deep thoughts and ask deep questions.

This little movie was a total delight. It had a great story line, was well acted and had a strong message while being poignant and humorous. The story of a 5th grader at an all boys Catholic school on a mission to find God is extremely funny, witty and compelling at the same time. This movie will make you run the gamut of emotions; you'll laugh, cry and at the end be satisfied that yes, there is indeed a God. Joshua's mission includes his discovery of life around him and for the first time he notices the wherefore's and why's of his family, friends and life in general. I found this movie to be very moving, so much so that I bought the DVD and am passing it around to friends and family. I give it my highest recommendation and know anyone who watches it won't be disappointed.

it was this movie, not the sixth sense, that turned me into the huge m. night shyamalan fan i am today. i saw this movie back before i even heard of the sixth sense. i saw it because i saw a trailer for it before another movie i had rented. after viewing just the trailer, my sister and i looked at each other and said, "we have to see that..." so, when i found it at blockbuster a few months later, i jumped to rent it. now i only wish that i had gotten a chance to see this limited release movie in theaters. the story of young Joshua questioning life while everyone, including his best friend, parents, and teachers scoff at him is heartbreaking. while searching for the answers of his initial question he sees life they way it should be seen. the thing i love most about m. night is the "FEELING" you get while watching his movies. there are two moments of heavy realization in this movie, millions of feel good moments, millions of laughing moments, millions of crying moments. i've since taped this movie off of cable and i still cry every time i see it. the only word i can think to describe this movie, and every other movie m. night has done, is beautiful. please go see it. you'll be glad you did.

I thought Sixth Sense was Mortimer Shyamalan's first film, but when I happened across this at a local flea market, I just had to snap it up. Yes, I buy fleas. You got a problem with that? Anyway, true to the style of Mortimer's distinctive oeuvre, the movie is crafted around a clever genre conceit which is carefully hidden away behind the seemingly mundane plot line and then hinted at throughout with lots of arty little boluses of symbolism, foreshadowing, subtext, and big red neon signs that flash on and off in Morse code for no apparent reason. I think this movie is pretty hard to find, so I'm revealing the ending below the line of hyphens that is below this paragraph... --------------------------------------------------------------------- At the end, it turns out that the school is actually a *magnet school*, and Joshua is the only student enrolled there who is not actually made of IRON.

"Rosie O'Donnel is hilarious!", says the box. The descriptions are misleading. THIS IS NOT A COMEDY. It is amusing at times, very slow, and emotionally moving. Even though I was expecting comedy, I watched the whole thing. That says something.

This movie is kind of disappointing. First, Rosie O'Donnel is in it. Second, Dennis Leary isn't funny when he keeps his comedy clean. However, there is one aspect that completely saved this film for me; the extras. The extras in this film are among the best I have ever seen in a movie hands down. One extra in particular is incredible. His name is Sean Judge. Although he is uncredited, his performance rivals that of Marlon Brando's in "The Godfather". He is consistently on cue and never misses a beat. Professionals everywhere could learn a lot from the work of Mr. Judge. "Wide Awake" will not go down in history as one of the greatest films of all time, but I will never forget the powerful performance of Sean Judge, the greatest extra of all time.
