The show featured what WCW billed as "The Rematch of the Decade" when Hollywood Hulk Hogan took on Sting for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. Due to issues with referees, indecisive finishes and nWo interference, J.J. Dillon vacated the WCW Championship shortly after Starrcade 1997; this rematch will settle the dispute and finally crown an undisputed champion. Elsewhere on the card Randy Savage continues to have issues with the nWo during his match with Lex Luger. The Outsiders try to win back their WCW tag team titles from The Steiner Brothers, and Booker T wrestles twice with the TV title on the line (against Rick Martel and Perry Saturn).
