I very rarely write comments here about films I didn't enjoy but this is different. This film boasts a cast that will be pulling people in cinemas. My advice is: don't bother. It's just the most boring, predictable, badly planned and executed piece of celluloid I've ever seen. It's as if Frank Oz had a good idea but got bored half-way through realising it. I haven't seen the original but surely the actors who got involved in this read the script of the remake? They can't have based their participation on the Seventies film, surely. Because the 2004 remake is full of awful cliches, bad jokes (OK, there are a couple of good lines but that's about it) and it is so empty of ideas that it makes you want to shout to the screen. If the actors playing in this film were unknowns there is NO WAY anyone would have gone to see it. It's just a parade of famous names (some good actors, some average) that sleepwalk through a dreadful script. It can't even become a cult classic - it's THAT average. 1/10 for me and that's being lenient.

Let me just say if this movie was made 10 years ago you would see a big fat 8 or 9 instead of a 5.3 or whatever the ridiculous rating is that it has now. This movie was at the very least decent and deserving of a much better rating. Not only did it successfully adapt from the novel but it also provided a not-so-cliché ending, one that the author apparently couldn't even think up. This movie was not anything revolutionary but a 5.3? Give me a goddamn break. What kind of biased jerkoffs are casting their votes anyway? My rating: 7.0/10

Reasons for seeing this film: 1. Good cast. Kidman is great in her new look and her performance is also decent. Matt Broderick sometimes falters, especially in the last part but overall good. Bette Midler, Glenn Close and Christopher Walken are also there. Faith Hill isn't used much. 2. The idea behind this film. I haven't read Ira Levin's novel. So the idea quite fascinated me. And the presentation in the film deliberately using stereotypes in every character is something that fits. Reason not to see the film: 1. The futile and irritating attempt to make this film a comedy. I gather that Levin's novel has no comic elements. It would be better if they restrict the story to plain thriller. the necessary dark humor is the plot itself. One doesn't need to overdo it. So, I'd definitely try to see the original 1975 film. This film has a star-studded cast, but as a film it's hardly above average.
