While "Salem's Lot" was my personal favorite book and mini-series "The Stand" based on the abridged edition of the novel, was captured very faithfully for the small screen. A first class script treatment, and inspired casting all round borough King's sometimes confusing story to life in the best way forward. Hats off to Gary Sinese, Bill Faggerbake, Miguel Ferrer, Rob Lowe, Ozzie Davis and Ruby Dee in particular. This mini-series again points out why Stephen King has become the master of the American Horror Story. I can't help but think he must have had a very disturbed childhood to have conjured up the horrors that he seems to continually churn out. You won't want to miss this one. See also: Salem's Lot-the full Mini-Series, and "It" also excellent adaptations of King novels.
Every character is a giant stereotype. They make the character of Apu from The Simpsons look nuanced. Even the good acting job by Gary Sinise is wasted by the fact the character being written so broadly. If you want watch a post apocalyptic series watch either version of Survivors from the BBC. While some of the characters in those series weren't great they more realistic than anything in this series. I remembered that this series was supposed to be good but watching today I can't help but constantly making fun of the episodes.
A deadly virus, a couple of survivors, a devil and an angel. Those are the main ingredients of this mini-series. After a virus has killed almost everyone in the country, the survivors are recruted by a woman named Mother Abigail, and a man named Randall Flagg. The first is an angel and the second is the devil himself. The group of Mother Abigail has to face Randall Flagg's group in order to save the country, and they have to do there upmost best in order to achieve that. Some of the actors were pretty good: Gary Sinise (Forrest Gump,Apollo 13,Of mice and men), Laura San Giacomo as Nadine Cross, Rob Lowe as the deaf Nick Andros, Jamey Sheridan as the devil and Molly "Breakfast Club" Ringwald as Fran Goldsmith. The others didn't fail as well, and after all this was a nice 6 hours of drama/horror.
I've seen few Stephen King's movie produced from novel and what i can say they all brilliant. I haven't imagine seeing this movie as good when i see the running time of more than 5 hours. Although it can be confusing sometimes on the story line but every small part of it make it a very excellent story. I guess i have to give another thumb up for this one.
I'm not gonna waste too much time , as it's precious. This is sooooooo bad in every way that it would be preferable to contract and die from the 'virus' than have to watch this again. I didn't 'have' to watch it, no. I thought it might be interesting due to the current Coronavirus situation. Total, utter garbage from hell! See other one star reviews for a full explanation as to why this is so unimaginably dreadful in every single way. Utter dross !
I really enjoyed this mini-series when it first came out. From the first scene this movie just pulled you in. A very underrated cast really shined in this movie. Gary Sinise and Rob Lowe were outstanding and one (Sinise) saw his career launch after this while the other (Lowe) re-established his career. My only complaint on this film was the ending sequence which seemed flat and anti-climatic. With such great build up in the first three installments I looked forward to the ending with excitement and anticipation unfortunately I got neither. 7/10
