Dus Kahaniyaan

Bollywood audiences have recently been exposed to mix of short stories with Darna Mana Hai, Darna Zaroori hai, Salam-E-Ishq, etc. In comparison, 10 stories here don’t have a common thread. Well, I don’t say that a good storyteller doesn’t need two hours and five songs to make his point, but this movie should have delivered better. But sadly, barring three to four stories, others were a mere waste of time or waste of talent. Adding to the plight was the predictability in most stories. One actually ends up counting x down and 10-x to go. The filmmakers though deserve credit for coming up with the concept of 10 short stories with a twist in the end, a new in Hindi Cinema. In brief on the tolerable of the lot: (1) Matrimony: Mandira Bedi, a bored wife of an MNC Banker Arbaaz Khan has found a way to spend her Thursdays but meets her match in the end. Maybe I appreciated it because it was the first of the ten stories and it doesn’t have any gyan or tears. (2) Zahir: A budding writer Manoj Bajpai gets interested in her neighbor Dia Mirza, reacts about something and ends up in a path of no return. Nothing great, but decent! (3) Pooranmashi: A story of Amrita Singh who following her heart just for once and messes everything for her daughter Minissha Lamba. Comparatively OK! (4) Lovedale: Aftab finds his love Neha Uberoi through destiny’s twist. The end was absolutely predictable but I at least liked since it was the only happy ending of the ten. The ones which were really intolerable: (5) High on the Highway: Jimmy Shergill and Masumeh are seen high on drugs throughout their entire screen time, both very jarring. The portrayal was sick. (6) Rise and Fall: Sanjay Dutt and Sunil Shetty are stereotype dons who meet a predictable end. They mostly played their roles with tons of boredom thrown in. (7) Sex on the Beach: Dino Morea finds a mysterious woman on a beach and invites him home for you know what. The end is a typical thriller with lots of skin show. (8) Strangers in the Night: Neha Dhupia and Mahesh Manjrekar are a couple who narrate deep secrets every anniversary. The dialogues & the twist were too cheap. (9) Rice Plate: Shabana Azmi and Naseruddin Shah in a confusion over a rice plate set against their divergent religious backgrounds. Remember the story on biscuits? (10) Gubbare: Nana Patekar who goes on an on about how he bought his wife balloons to end quarrels. I guess Nana Patekar too has become boringly predictable off late.

Change is always good...especially when u get to see 10 stories at the price of one... 8 out of 10 stories were well directed and interesting .... the 2 exceptions were Lovedale and Sex on the beach ... though the later scared a bit.... both of these stories were easily predictable Matrimony : Good twist... Mandira Bedi gave a surprise. : 3.5/5 High on the Highway : Nice... but that shaking camera was too much : 3/5 Pooranmasi : Really good ... Amrita Singh gives best of her in such a short time : 4/5 Strangers in the Night : Superb editing and awesome narration : 4.5/5 Zahir : It was a bit OK... I watched such story on Doordarshan's Healthcare Programmes : 2.5/5 Lovedale : Average ... not as good as others : 2/5 Sex on the Beach :Fully predictable.... I'll be giving it some points just because of one thrill that scared me a bit : 1.5/5 Rice Plate : I've read this story ...I've seen this story years before.. but Shabana Azmi made it look great, Naseerudin Shah doesn't have much to do : 3.5/5 Gubbare : Nana Paekar again as expected giving his best , though there was no newness in the story : 3/5 Rise & Fall : In my perception it was the most powerful part of the movie... Sanjay Dutt in his Dus Look and Suniel Shetty in that nice grown beard giving one of their best performance.... Editing was a lot confusing...which made it superb .. the child actors were good too...very stylish story... Sanjay Gupta's style : 5/5

Dus Kahaniya falls in the line of the daring attempts made by few directors of presenting different stories of different people in one movie. But this was the most unique of all them, till today. Dus Kahaniya is just like somebody buying a short story book from a book shop which comprises for 10 different stories. But the real flaw, which i think was, i was never attemted to establish a link between these stories which may also be said as the unique point of the movie. But i don't think this gamble paid off. Also i would certainly mention about a few stories which i personally liked, from the flock presented,were Rice Plate(Nassir Sahab and Shabana Aajmi ji,directed by Rohit Roy), Zahir (Manoj Bajpai and Dia Mirza, Directed by Sanjay Gupta) and Puranmasi(Amrtia Singh,Minnisha Lamba and Permeet Sethi, directed by Meghana Gulzar). I would certainly say that people should watch the movie and if you don't watch it expecting links between the stories this one you will certainly like. Here i would also mention that the most disappointing person was Apporv Lakhiya. I think the story was not new to the public, for me at least. I expect more form him after seeing some of his brilliant work.

Dus Kahaniyan - Six Director's 10 short stories in one film is the novel part which can be compared with "Darna Mana Hai" kind of movies. The only difference is that here "Its like seeing 10 short films at one go" as they are not related with each other and no linking scenes. Here I will rate each story for you and that will give you the whole idea of the movie : The Best of 10 Stories 1. Puranmaasi (Amrita Singh, Minisha Lamba and Parmeet Sethi) If this short story does not inspire our film-makers to look into our own literature in Hindi, Urdu & Punjabi for new subjects then no one can inspire us really. Directed by Meghna Gulzar its based on the short story of Kartar Singh Duggal. The plot is so powerful and shockingly impactful that you feel surprised, why it was not adopted for a complete movie. The most impressive of the 10 and the unarguably the best part of the movie. You will only remember this at the back of the mind after watching all the 10. Other Good Stories 2. Strangers in the night (Neha Dhupia, Mahesh Manjrekar) (Good use of surprise element, human touch and sensuality) 3. Zahir (Manoj Bajpai, Dia Mirza) (You find it funny as you get to know the real thing though its quite serious) 4. Rice Plate (Shabana Azmi and Naseeruddin Shah) Rohit Roy makes his directorial debut but chooses an inspired theme. Though he does a fine job but the similarities with the short film "The Lunch Date" (1989) are really questionable. Sex on the Beach (Dino Morea and Tareena Patel) (This too follows the "Darna Mana Hai" Ghost thing) 9. Gubbare (Anita Hasnandani, Nana Patekar and Rohit Roy) (Again on "Darna Mana Hai" lines) 10. Rise and Fall (Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty) (Gang Fights and Stunts……Just Passable) So with only 4 out of 10 watchable stories, it gives only average rating to the movie. Rating : 2.5 Stars (Dont miss "Puranmaasi", the story is the pride of our rich literature)

This movie is very bad written/ poor directed / poor acted. It managed to get 3 out of me just because of Manoj Bajpai - Diya Mirza's story. That was acted well and made sense. Everything else sucked hard, music, amateuristic performances, and the whole idea of telling 10 different stories. There should be continuity in a movie, rather than just paste 10 stories to each other, that makes it utterly boring. I was expecting more. A total waste, don't watch it if u have a busy life and want to catch a nice flick. Thumbs down. + Manoj Bajpai/Diya Mirza/Nana Patekar - Everything else

"Dus Kahaniyaan" comes from the stable of Sanjay Gupta's production house-WHITE FEATHER FILMS. In the past they have come out with "Musafir", "Kaante", "Zinda" & "Shootout At Lokhandwala". Two things that one can be certain of in the movies from this production house are Sanjay Dutt and lots and lots of style! In "Dus Kahaniyaan" you find both, but in parts! "Dus Kahaniyaan" can be described best as like a book of short stories covering different genres or spectrum. It has , like the title says, 10 stories. Each one of them is a separate story and therefore what makes this movie different from the likes of "Darna Mana Hai" etc. is that the stories are not connected by any common thread! Each story exists in a different world, completely independent of each other just like the different stories in a book. Now, coming to the important part-are the stories good enough to grip you? Well, personally I feel that there are at least 4 stories that are a notch above the other 6. That's my personal opinion though some viewers might take a liking to a few of the other stories as well. The best of the lot are (not necessarily in that order): MATRIMONY-Features Mandira Bedi, Arbaaz Khan and Sudhanshu Pandey. It's about marriage and infidelity. Good acting from all three and the twist in the tale is awesome-my favourite of the ten stories! RICE PLATE-Shabana Azmi and Naseruddin Shah. You expect the best from them and are not disappointed. The story is about religious belief's-two contrasting views! A subtext of communal harmony. ZAHIR-Another story with a twist! Features Manoj Bajpai and Dia Mirza. Good narration though acting was just about passable! It's about a writer (Manoj Bajpai) who has failed in love but see a ray of hope (yet again) in Dia Mirza. But is She ready? Has an underlying social message too! POORNAMASI-A tale of honour. Revolves around a mother-daughter played by Amrita Singh and Minnisha Lamba respectively. A decent story (that's the least you can expect from it's writer-Meghna Gulzar). The other 6 stories that I haven't mentioned didn't really grip me! There's SEX ON THE BEACH (Dino Moreo, Tareena Patel) that has some good visuals, sound effects and tilts towards the spooks but just doesn't do it. GOOBARE (Nana Patekar, Rohit Roy, Hansika Mansandani) is predictable and so is the one that has Aftab Shivdasani and Neha Uberoi! RISE AND FALL involving Sanjay Dutt and Suniel Shetty is confusing (due to the way it's narrated) and is only high on style. STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT (Neha Dhupia, Mahesh Manjrekar) is below average too. And the weakest is HIGH ON THE HIGHWAY (Jimmy Shergill). The advantage for the viewer when you are watching a movie like this is that the movie literally moves on! If you don't like a story, it wouldn't tax you for long-that's the best part. Some stories, like I said, could have been better. Sometimes, like in their earlier movies, the stress is put too much on Style and Gloss rather than the fundamental part-the script. The point is then missed! So an overall rating of 5.5/10. 4 for the four good stories and 1.5 for genuine innovation-something different. A sequel-why not. Can get 6 or 7 right next time!

this movie is not that good just because it has 25 actors and six directors and ten stories. when i saw the trailer of this i thought it was gonna be like sin city. guess what it was boring at least some of the stories were good. i didn't want to buy it but my stupid cousin told me its awesome. the tenth story was the best one there and the song dus kahaniyaan is good but guys don't by it its a waste of money renting it is better. this movie is crap and sh*tty. thats my opinion. see ya

Its just like readin some short stories book... 10diff stories comin 1 after another without any relation to each other... 6 directors... As it is a collection of stories, it is difficult to rate it as whole... so i have rated it in order of their occurrence... for 1st n last they have shown name of story... for the rest just the name of directors n actors... every story lasts for nearly 10 min... 1. Matrimony(D: Sanjay Gupta)- 8/10... 2. No Name, (D: Hansal Mehta)- 3/10... 3. No Name, (D: Meghna Gulzar)-9/10... 4. No Name, (D: Sanjay Gupta)- 7/10... 5. No Name, (D: Sanjay Gupta)- 8/10... 6. No Name, (D: Jasmeet Dhodi)-8/10... 7. No Name, (D: Apoorva Lakhia)-7/10... 8. No Name, (D: Rohit Roy) - 8/10... 9. No Name, (D: Sanjay Gupta)- 8/10... 10. Rise & Fall(D: Sanjay Gupta, Hansal Mehta)- 9/10... All actors appear for max of 10 min.. Hence everyone is a guest star...no one in lead... No song, but the music is good...
