Schemers

Given that there wasn't much else on at my local due to this COVID-19 causing many big Hollywood films including now which I've just heard about, the cursed Bond Film No Time To Die which has been pushed back for the 3rd time to April 2021. Bummer. Anyway... The follows a young man named Davie who back in 1979 starts up gig venues after a life changing injury in football. This only happens after he asks out the nurse at the hospital & promises to take her to the first venue. He then realises how much money he & his friends can make by inviting bands to these venues & starts to go bigger & better. I found the film to be alright, not amazing but alright. It was interesting (though based off a true story) to see a film shot in the hometown I live in. Though I myself am not from Dundee I have been living there for nearly 20 years now & recognised a good couple of the locations in which the film was shot. The acting was alright also as with the some of the scenes. I did feel the film lacked some scenes to keep you interested & could've been more emphasised in a goo couple of areas. However there were some funny moments here & there. Overall for a film that is at a lean 87 minutes, it's not a bad watch. 6/10

Very disappointed with this film. Read the hype and thought it had potential. However, poor acting poor accents and a pretty rubbish film. Watched it to see Dundee which was the only good thing about the film. More research should have been done as the language used was not typical Dundonian. Spent half the time watching it laughing at the accents and poor acting. Not a great film rather disappointing.

I hate movies with children playing characters that are involved in adult situations that children are never involved in. Whoever casted this movie did a horrible job as it is not realistic in the slightest. And the music is 25 years too late. And the accents are too much gibberish. Its really hard to sit and watch this junk.

Fast-paced Award-Winning Debut Feature - doesn't let you come up for breath. A lot of the talent lies within the editing and acting. The exterior shots of Dundee, Scotland are quite stunning. Saw earlier reviews comparing it to the likes of cult classics, Trainspotting & Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels in terms of edit and use of v/o - if you like these films, you'll love this! Came to watch Kerry Browne - only disappointed I didn't see more of her.

As an actor when you appear in something it's very difficult to be objective. At the premier you sit there just preying your scenes are ok. But this time it's different. I genuinely forgot I'm in Schemers. I loved it. I laughed in all the right places. It's so good I genuinely forgot I'm in it! Schemers strength is its characters, It's situations, the brilliant tale of Dave McLean played wonderfully by the outstanding Conor Berry. But the real star of this gem of a movie is Dundee itself. A unique place with a humour and charm all it's own. I am Biased but I loved this movie. It sold out at its premier and all I heard was laughter and excitement. So proud of this wonderful movie.

David wanted to be a football player before an injury. Now he's in love with a nurse named Shona and the concerts and disco he's running - with his buddies Scot and John - have all been to impress her. After a few successes, our hero decides to go all in on a hugely ambitious Iron Maiden show. However, to make that happen, he has to throw in with a gangster named Fergie, which means that the biggest show of his life may just be his last one. This film is based on truth, as the early years of Dave Mclean's life in the music business really did have him promote a Maiden show at Dundee's Caird Hall on June 12, 1980. For Maiden fans, they opened with "Sanctuary." This is Mclean's first movie as a writer, director and producer. He brought plenty of American grunge and punk bands to the UK, including Nirvana, Mudhoney, The Smashing Pumpkins and Green Day before managing Placebo. He's to be forgiven for making his film look, feel and play a lot like Trainspotting, because both films cover a lot of the same ground. It does have a good soundtrack going for it, including Saxon, Hawkwind, Dead Kennedys, The View, Placebo and, of course, Iron Maiden.
