I went to see this movie with great anticipation and was disappointed with the film. The outstanding thing about this movie was the horse who was beautiful and could really fly. This was a take off on the old Arabian nights stories of the 40's and 50's. The special effects were very good and especially the sand storm that hit mid picture. The female villain was expected as well as the bit players that were there to sabotage the win by our hero. This one can wait for the video store. Save your price of admission as this one can readily wait for you to go to the video store. It was a valiant try of going back to the GREAT movies of the earlier years, but it did not work.
A performance from Viggo Mortensen as dry as the desert he raced his horse across. If it wasn't for the supporting characters I probably would have left the theater midway through. Beautiful scenery, great imagery, but no power performance for our post-Aragorn. There's nothing special about this film. You can tell where it's going, what's going to happen and nothing is exciting about it. I was utterly disappointed and I wouldn't go see it again even if I was paid to do so. It's 133 minutes of pure numb agony. Very dull and anticlimactic. I'd stay away from this film if at all possible. Ruins the story it's based on. 1/5
I don't know why this movie hasn't fared better. It features top notch performances, a compellingly active and beautifully flowing story, and some brilliant direction. I have to say the direction was the biggest surprise. Joe Johnston (currently slated to direct Jurassic Park 4) of Jumanji and JP3. I was not very impressed with either, but frankly, Hidalgo gives me hope for JP4. Maybe he's grown as a director. Hidalgo is a beautiful tale of a washed up cowboy and his beautiful pony braving the Arabian desert and all its treacheries. Stunning visuals, uplift this beautiful work and deliver a fine finished product. It rates an 8.8/10 from... the Fiend :.
I enjoyed the movie.A few years ago I saw a documentary on F.T.Hopkins. Viggo is a favorite. It was good to see Omar Shariff. My sister's three kids are going to love the story of this.I do recommend it to any-one who likes westerns, horse riding and just general good fun.I liked the sand dunes. The different horses, land scape veiws. It shows what I thought to be more side of the Native American Indian.Beautiful colours in the horses.I think Viggos love and admiration for the horse shows in this film.It also shows an older part of amercia. I felt you can learn something from the film. There is a very good shot of the statue of liberty when he leaves his country for the race.Laurel
