Les amours imaginaires

The film isn't perfect by any means, but it shows great promise. there is a thematic and aesthetic vision that permeates the film, and though it was at times a bit excessive, and at other times a bit petty, it maintained a sense of artistic integrity throughout. i'm excited to see how dolan's voice matures - he's well on his way to becoming one of the greats.

Loved the ending of this movie but i can't help but think that the scene of marie sharing the umbrella would've been better. Of course the current ending reflects the movie and insinuates that the cycle continues with this new dude, as the two friends become infatuated with him. However, i would've personally preferred the raining scene as the finale because it would send a different message: the power of friendship. It would explore how despite the tension in their friendship, as they both coped with heartbreak, the two still remained friends. The act of marie sharing her umbrella under francis shows how they both reach a mutual understanding and that marie is willing to move past the obstacle of nicolas, same with francis as he accepts her gesture.

It's a pleasure for the senses. The dialogues, the way Xavier Dolan plays with the colors and the emotions like, for example, in the scene in the countryside where Marie and Francis fight and Nicolas is just there staring - Magnificent. There are so many scenes that are just perfect that I couldn't even list here if you'd give me an entire day. I'm so happy to see that most of the (talented) actors in Dolan's preview's movie are also here. It laughed so hard when, in this movie, the character Xavier Dolan plays is trying to hook up with Schneider's character when, in "J'ai tué ma mere" it just them a few days ;D The passion and lust the characters transmit in this movie is beyond human comprehension. Only with the party scene (pas this on), the film is worth watching; but the good thing is, there are tons of other goosebump-inducing scene.

The plot is fine but the film is overstylised and overdone. The actors aren't very likeable (sorry Dolan), so it's difficult to feel anything while watching other than slight anticipation for the next scene. That distance is felt between the characters as well. Ultimately, the stylistic choices don't do much to carry the film and it seems to be style for the sake of style which is a bit of a drag. What I liked: There was one scene where Francis and Francine were watching Nico and it alternated between shots of Nico and art which I found memorable What I didn't like: Too much slow mo Too many songs in the film and it's quite jarring when one song (with lyrics) plays immediately after another the coloured scenes don't add much and are not enjoyable I didn't understand the role of the random speakers - some of them were interesting (acting and text wise) but seems confused in the midst of the storyline.

This is a slow and grossly overrated film about infatuation that in its format and style resembles the previous film of the same director. The film aims to portrait the superficiality and insanity of obsessive infatuation and it succeeds to a certain extent not without boring the viewers to death. Just like in "I Killed My Mother" the director falls short of what he is trying to achieve.

A modern retro woman Marie and her Gay friend Francis both desirability falling into deep obsessive love for the enigmatic guy Nicola; who has a perfect blonde curly hair with seductively smiles. jealousy causes cracks in Marie and Francis' friendship & turned it into toxic. One-hundred minutes of heartbreaking, passion., craziness, hysterical moments with sumptuous color, elaborated upon by the painful voice Dalida saying " Bang bang…chi al cuore colpirà. " in slow motion. Delivered by short documentary-style interviews those unidentified losers in love who relate their unhappy stories. French-Canadian Xavier Dolan (twenty-two years old) has been one of my favorite actor and director after I watched I Killed My Mother. So I was super excited to see his second film. From the very moment I knew will be one of my favorite movies.

The French 'In the Mood for Love' duplicate art-film which manages to miss the art and barely hit the film. Xavier Dolan's Les amours imaginaires or Heartbeats is a sensual, potentially immoral and audiovisually evocative investigation of love, jealousy and desire (for sex) using all but obvious glances, nail-biting, and fidgeting to convey to prevailing mood. Its "shade-throwing" and now-cliché revelations about modern sexuality fall flat but it is still intriguing in its execution and insight into modern continental culture; it is 'The Great Beauty' without the great beauty. More in the mood for sex than In the Mood for Love; yet somehow by the end, I couldn't get enough of it. I would recommend the film if you liked either 'The Great Beauty' or 'In the Mood for Love', which I did greatly, and vice-versa I guess too.

First off, let me say that this movie is very chic. The pacing of the main plot is inter-cut with clips of other characters discussing their own romances or failed romances Harry Met Sally Style - except the tales that these characters are relating is nowhere near as cutesy. The basic plot of the movie is thus, a gay friend and a straight friend both have the hots for the same super-smooth blond, Nicholas (Niel Schnieder). Both Xavier's character (who seems like he is Xavier himself) and Marie, played by Monia Chokri are friendly and flirtatious with the object of their affections - but in the end all is for naught and the player chooses neither. The look of the movie is sleek in terms of style and there is a lot to enjoy here in terms of character development and dialogue. It also neatly avoids happy skip into the sunset endings in favour of brutal realism.

Of all the films I've watched by Dolan this comes for me as his best. Stunning visual style where his use of music feels best suited. A bittersweet take on platonic love that, reading it in another level, depicts as well a generation obsessed by its own image.
