Guadalupe: The Miracle and the Message

Documentaire

Durée5h

The most important event in the evangelization of the New World occurred in December, 1531. Over the course of four days, the Virgin Mary, under the title of Our Lady of Guadalupe, appeared to an indigenous convert named Juan Diego. As a result of this encounter, and the image miraculously imprinted on Juan Diego's tilma (cloak), nine million Native Americans embraced the Catholic faith, and the Americas began its transformation into "the Catholic hemisphere." Our Lady of Guadalupe's message of love had replaced the institutionalized violence of the Aztec culture and built a bridge between two worlds. Guadalupe: The Miracle and the Message, narrated by the legendary Placido Domingo, traces the history of this transformative event from the 16th century to the present. Featuring interviews with leading theologians, historians and experts on the scientific inquiries into the miraculous image-this gripping film explores both the inexplicable mysteries behind the image, and the continued relevance of the Guadalupe apparition to the modern world.

Lying for attention, childish ignorance, a grave misapprehension, a good story told even better, transcription of the emperor's new clothes, indoctrination issues, synaptic misfiring; all mentioned way better and plausible as actual explanations than the ones obviously impossible to scrutinise proclaimed by the clergy. So far nothing has been presented even by the locals coming close to a reasonable approach to the claimed event based on the account of one infamously wayward individual, which if nothing else demonstrates the underlying apetite for reputation being far more of an incentive behind keeping a collective narrative together than that of genuineness qua intellectual honesty.

A beautiful documentary, narrated by Jim Caviezel, exploring the origin, some of the miraculous elements of the image of our Lady of Guadalupe, and the effect it has had on the Americas and throughout the world. I enjoyed the flashback scenes of Juan Diego's encounter with Our Lady and events of the past. The effect of his encounter on the indigenous people was astounding and a sign of God's great love for all people. The appearance of Our Lady did away with human sacrifice and replaced that with worship and adoration. I also enjoyed the comments made by priests and historians in Spanish, which were subtitled, but since I understand Spanish it was good to have those to listen to.

I believe ... However, to KOC and the Catholic Church I say, "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath ...". ...yeah, the commandment you conveniently left out. You might want to look at the First Commandment again too. This is Catholics' propaganda and does disservice to Virgin Mary, if she did appear under the title of Our Lady of Guadalupe. There are better films on the subject which fortunately I saw before this because after this I began to doubt that the Event ever occurred.
