The picture is a complete and utter failure. And we are not only talking about an imperfect and boring story that does not introduce tension, a picture of low quality or incomprehensible things that do not need to be spoiled. The game of the main character is just terrible. I have not seen such imperfect and weak work for a long time.
Upon arriving at a remote cabin for a getaway, a woman and her boyfriend discover another couple already staying there. They decide to share the rental for the night, but the boyfriend's disappearance sparks a race for answers. Winona Ryder and Dermot Mulroney give terrific performances as well as their supporting cast Brianne Tju and Owen Teague as a young couple with bad intentions. I can usually guess how movies will end but not in this case. This ending was 100% a red herring. I LOVED it.
In this day and age, if a movie has more dialogue than action, the exsperts have to let you know the movie sucked.. Attention deficit generation. Move past those reviews and focus on the more intelligent ones..
A womans boyfriend goes missing after spending a night in a cabin with another couple. I really did not like this film. Winona Ryder is the lead but the film treats her (or her character rather) as a old and rather unattractive woman. I thought she looked beautiful in this film. I was surprised she was in this crappy film.
Both the two movies wonderful Winona Ryder's made in the past seven years are hidden gems, and while low-key thriller "Gone In The Night" isn't a patch on "Destination Wedding" it's still original, compelling, well paced & nicely played. Imperfect couple Ryder & John Gallagher Jnr get double-booked at a mountain AirBnB cabin (owned by Dermot Mulroney (good)) with hipsters Brianne Tju (superb) & Owen Teague... from where Gallagher disappears, apparently with Tju. Despite some holes, the script (from co-writers Matthew Derby & debut director Eli Horowitz) cleverly cuts timelines to layer up its satisfyingly (if not mind-blowingly) twisty tale. Good stuff.
I will always be inclined to watch anything by Winona Ryder but the good to great actors here work with a problematic script even though they tried their best. The film started okay but went downhill, and was ruined by an entirely unconvincing ending. I simply winced at the thought of all these actors "make the ending work" but it is so absurd (the logic, the action, the haphazard turn of events...) even considering suspension of common sense in these "thrillers". The expositions with a guy who showed up out of nowhere to explain Dermot Mulroney's background, and the girl revealing the father's false diagnosis are downright crude.
Despite the acting chops of Winona Ryder and Dermot Mulroney this film fails to leave an impression. I expect more from those two and it was not forthcoming. I think that's partly down to them and partly down to crap dialogue and poor direction. Only watch it if you are a huge fan of either of those two and are just watching it to say you ticked the box. The story is actually excellent, I loved it, but the direction is so feeble that I was directing it properly in my mind as the story unfolded. The acting is also way below par for those two heavy weights and the pace is like a 1 legged ant. It made me think of Dean Koontz, and how he would have made a killer short story out of this. A huge opportunity squandered, I would say.
