I've really never been one for non-mainstream "artsy" films (a category into which, in my estimation, Franklyn fits in). I picked this title up at random and mostly (I'll be honest) because of the promise of a masked detective. Though the film didn't exactly deliver on my expectations I can't say it was a disappointment. Though extremely unusual and often just downright weird, this film delivered a rather hopeful (yet not overly done) message through some of the darker characters I've encountered lately. The fact that the ending (a nicely written convergence) threw me for a loop was a nice surprise too as that is a rare thing to find in movies these days. All told, it was something different that is definitely worth a watch.

The organized religion bash is trite but the characters and concept were inspiring and entertaining. Yes, humans want to be a part of something and we want to know what is true, we also like things that are good, known to be good, or promise good. And there is a uniquely beneficial reward for doing good anonymously...I hope people learn to empathize and look out for those who suffered trauma. My take-away is that we struggle so very much, and the solution is compassion, standing for your rights, and welcoming destiny. btw destiny and free-will coexist.

I really wanted to like this film. It has all the elements i love in film, EVA GREEN! Gothic and neo noir style, beautiful visuals and an intriguing beginning. It does however have a major flaw, i could not connect with this ever convoluted plot. It was irrational and nonsensical and tried to hard to be clever delivering any sort of rationale for the final 5 minutes. Which means sitting through a movie that functions as a puzzle that never really materializes. It certain is unique, and it did have potential. But then it didn't. Simple as that. Final Grade C-

Who finances. bleak, turgid, slow moving stories like this? The acting is...OK The scenery and photography are OK But, where's the story? Also, didn't like or sympathize with a single character. Not good. Do you have to invest multiple hours to get caught up in it? I wasn't willing to. Maybe it's a British thing. After an hour all I could say was "who cares"? Let them all die. In essence it is a weak, interminable remake of "V for Vendetta" with one tenth the pacing or energy.

This was a revelation and stayed true to a real dark fantasy mystery should be. If you're movie watching aspirations haven't successfully led you somewhere between City of the Lost Children, Finding Neverland and Watchmen, then this movie might not be for you. Especially when considering it's entire story falls somewhere between the films just mentioned. Brain power is required if you actively pay attention. One thing which stood out was how they painted a visual picture of the antagonist's psychopathology. Of course, none makes full sense until the end. I thought this was great.

I only lasted for 25 minutes. The actors declaim their lines rather than conversing and the whole thing is (obviously, purposefully) heavily stylised. It's probably some sort of parody with a deep message but just seemed weird-for-the-sake-of-it to me. Wearing sunglasses at night is just silly.

This film has a lot of eye candy, but unlike some other eye candy heavy films such as, "Inception" or "Avatar", the film has some deeper themes and plot to support it. I originally watched this film for the CGI, but then I watched it again working through the plot. My only disappointment was that not all of the edges of the plot line added up perfectly. I think that the themes of despair, redemption, and meaning are pretty heavy to attack in a single film. And some of the characters in the film, are at first, completely off putting. In fact, the most rewarding element of the film was that each character resorts to a fantasy world when their emotional state becomes so disturbed that other people can no longer (or no long wish to) connect with them. I found these shocking scenes of disconnection very, very real.

Ryan Phillippe's character Priest says, "If a God is willing to prevent evil, but is not able - Then He is not omnipotent. If He is able, but not willing - Then He must be Malevolent. If He is neither able nor willing, then why call Him a God? Why else do bad things happen to good people." After losing my daughter to cancer, these words resonated loudly for me. As a lifelong Agnostic, I've often struggled with these questions, but they were so neatly summed up in this film that it stuck with me as one of my favorite quotes. digitalRITUAL
