this is possibly my favourite movie of all time. it might not be for everyone; the humour is a tat strange, or perhaps twisted, yet intelligent. I'm not sure how much of it is lost in translation (subtitles) but if you're not too uptight, and you want an alternative to the usual American comedy style, it's definitely worth a watch. it isn't especially a chick flick, but I haven't yet spoken with a female who has watched it and didn't find it hilarious. I've watched two other movies from the same director (Anders Thomas Jensen); 'de grønne slagtere' (the green butchers) and 'Adams æbler' which I however didn't find to be see-worthy and cannot recommend - it is as if the director took those a little too far, they are too morbid and violent for my taste. how ever 'Blinkende Lygter' is just perfect, in my opinion.
How can you mix slap-stick/Laurel and Hardy comedy and mean Pusher/Bleeder violence? That simply doesn't work for me! Ole Thestrup and Fritz Helmuth are simply too stupid and pinheaded - especially Ole Thestrup. The hunting scene along with the final get-even scene are just too stupid and unrealistic... Apart from that, I like the story, the acting (especially Mads Mikkelsen) and the dialog. Still I can't quite figure out how it's possible to get lost in a forest near Frederica when driving from Copenhagen to Barcalona? It's motorway all the way!? I'm looking forward to seeing the Hollywood version...
This was actually a surprice for me since most danish movies usually suck ass. Its kinda like "I Kina spiser de hunde" but a little bit more serious. The actors are doing a very good job on this movie, so you could always see the movie for that reason. NOTE: This is NOT a dogme film, so if that is all you want to see-then skip it. This a film filled with dark humor-which I happend to like a lot:) But in the end you will probably only get something out of this if you hails from Denmark, Norway or Sweden... Toke Eld Denmark
Guys, if you are looking for someone to make an excellent movie for a cheap price, then Anders Thomas Jensen is the right choice. He made an awesome movie about some sad personal tragedies, and the actors brings it to life in a brilliant way. Great written lines and a fantastic story with many turningpoints. Dont miss this movie. Its close to perfection.
I'm an American and I rented this movie from by foreign exchange friend whose from Denmark. I just didn't think this movie had a good plot. I mean come on, the director is trying to do the Tarantino(Pulp Fiction, Reservior Dogs) style and the thing is that there's 4 childhood gangsters and they steal some money from their boss and they run away with it and later have a restaurant???? This plot sucks major. The plot is possibly one of the worst I've ever herd. I didn't find this movie that violent how my friend said it was. There was some funny moments at times but the rest are just plain dull. I haven't seen much Denmark films, but this one I gotta put a thumbs down. 3/10
If you have not found out by now that Danish movies are excelent. Go see this one and you will not be disappointed. This is a little surreal story of friends and friendship and how they became what they are. A lot of fun to watch.
I read the user comments before watching the movie. I don't fully agree with other user's opinion that there are too much brutal scenes, but I admit that people not liking them might not like the movie. Anyway, it is quite an abstract movie, and in that scope you also have to see the brutal scenes. So, if you don't like abstract stories, dont watch it! The movie is certainly not stunning, but I would not have wanted to miss it.
How this qualifies as a comedy - even by Danish definitions. It is simply difficult to see how the amount of superfluous and graphic violence contributes to the film. That said, each of the four central protagonists reveal a source for their criminality deriving from the horrific childhoods each had to experience. This adds a layer of something supposed to be like depth to each character - but it's really not enough to make us care much about the characters. It's a start - not a completed development.
This is one of the most boring films I've ever experienced but I'm still giving four stars, one for Peter, one for Arne, one for Stefan and one for Trokild.
