On July 31, 2010, at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, undefeated American prospect Daniel Jacobs squared off against Russian technician Dmitry Pirog for the vacant WBO Middleweight Championship. Jacobs, known as “The Golden Child,” started fast, using his athleticism and speed to control the early rounds. His jab and movement kept Pirog on the back foot, and it looked like Jacobs was building a lead on the scorecards. But Pirog stayed patient, applying steady pressure and looking for openings. In round 5, Pirog delivered one of the most shocking moments of the year. He slipped Jacobs’ jab and uncorked a devastating right hand that landed flush, dropping Jacobs hard to the canvas. Unable to beat the count, Jacobs suffered his first professional loss, while Pirog was crowned the new WBO Middleweight Champion by emphatic knockout. 📍 Date: July 31, 2010 📍 Location: Mandalay Bay Events Center, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA 🏆 Result: Pirog wins via KO in Round 5 🏆 Title on the line: Vacant WBO Middleweight Championship This fight remains one of boxing’s biggest “what if” moments—Pirog looked destined for greatness, but injuries cut his career short.
