I would give this movie 9 stars if it wasn't trying to bill itself as a comedy. This is a great movie about adult age children who have mental challenges--in this case, it's not clear whether it's Asperger's, severe learning issues, or just instability. Frankly, it's irrelevant, but the movie does an exquisite job of showing the balance/inbalance of parents trying to help, trying to be supportive, and yet perhaps, also obstructing a child growing up. The performances for most of the movie were fantastic, not one wrong casting. The plot moves slowly, so even with a few comedic moments, I would hardly describe this as a comedy. The scenes at the cocktail party were funny, in a black humor sort of way, but the overall tenor was serious and complex. And as such, it was a wonderful movie.

Quite simply I thought this was an understated masterpiece. The three key performances gelled together wonderfully and the resolution left me feeling deeply rewarded. Wonderful piece of work. John.C. Reilly is in a class of his own. His countenance is so charmingly vulnerable and laid-back he's a joy to watch. A true master. Jonah Hill is also going from strength to strength. His charming manner and sometimes even unnerving intelligence is mesmerising. A great performance Marisa Tomei provided a more obvious emotional balance for John and Jonahs quirkiness and gave a glorious performance. This film is what truly great film-making is all about. It enriches you.

CYRUS – CATCH I (B+) Cyrus is really unusual and funny in very quirky way. When the movie starts off, its like Shrek (John C. Rielly) falling for the Princess Fiona (Marisa Tomei) Then enters the Sweet looking Jonah Hill and then the real fun starts. It's just so fun to watch Jonah Hill play John C. Rielly… Jonah Hill is really great this time, and he was totally effortless. There is something really great about scenes between them. John C. Rielly did a fantastic Job. Marisa Tomei looks really cool and it was good to see her after a long time in a decent movie (I've not seen The Wrestler yet). Catheinr Keener was good as always. The only thing which I didn't like that much was the ending, well it's a happy ending but it just came too fast and in very typical predictable way. Anyways, I had great time watching it and if you love quirky comedies you are In for a treat.

The situation in ridiculous, but at the same time entirely believable bearing in mind the characters' own background and where they in life when they meet. The ending could have been more punchy, but overall it leaves a positive impression due to naturalistic, low-key humour and well flowing narrative.

I have seen worse movies, but not many. An all-star cast, with some good moments wasted on a slow moving, unfunny, terrible movie. People who thought this was good, need psychiatric help. All copies of this movie should be burned and all reference to it removed for all of eternity. The occasional scene of good acting did little to make this movie watchable. It's one of those movies, where you think with such a good rating, it's going to pick up at any moment. Just when it looks promising it falls flat again. Spoiler alert, you cannot spoil a bad movie.

I've tried to watch this movie hoping it will be funny. At least awkward funny, because of Reilly and Jonah Hill. But it wasn't. It took me a lot of courage to get through the first 30 minutes, and I had to give up the rest of the movie. Imagine you had to star in a comedy but did not know what to say to make it funny. No script, no previous experience, just improvisation. That's the feeling I got from Cyrus. A bunch of weird lines, coming from weird characters. No flow, no beauty, just some words forced out of the mouths of people fed up with life and looking for some happiness. I never liked Reilly, and if you don't either, don't watch the movie. Jonah Hill is as weird as they and, I must say it again, the lines suck. It's like there was no continuity whatsoever. It takes too long for the characters to open their mouths and say something. And when they finally do, you wish they didn't.

If you was to look at the posters or see the trailer for Cyrus you could be mistaken for thinking this was a typical Jonah Hill Comedy but you would be completely wrong. This is a strangely , sweet , black comedy that treats the audience like an adult unlike the typical Judd Apatow movies we are used to seeing. John C Reilly is great as the like unlikely new boyfriend of Marisa Tomei and things are going so well that there has to be a catch and that's the son played by Jonah Hill. What i like about this film is the director and writers really could have gone down the childish route but they were brave enough not to go there. This is a great little film that relies totally on a good script and some really excellent sympathetic acting. My only criticism is the camera work. They have tried to go down "The Office" route with deliberate amateurish zooming and it really doesn't work. All in all , Cyrus is an enjoyable little movie that you cant help but admire.
