When I saw the trailer in the theater I was very impressed. At that time there wasn't much press about this movie. So for some reason I forgot about this and did not go to see it in the theater. Which after seeing this movie on video I regret deeply! Because this is one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen. The heroic bloodshed in the movie is equal to that of a John Woo movie. Mark Dacascos is excellent as "the crying freeman". Maybe the story is not really compelling. But the atmosphere in the movie is just right. From beginning to end you will be caught in an alternative reality which seems real enough. But throughout the story you realize that it is different from our world. Now realizing this movie is based on a manga comic it makes sense. Christophe Gans does such a perfect job that in my opinion he should make more live action adaptations of mangas. Because this one was magnificent!
This movie is brilliant, it's just the way action movies should be. Not about explosions, stunts or violence, but brought with a certain pain, desolation and pure poetry. You can tell that the base for this movie lies in Japan because the movie itself is a bit like a manga movie. It get's really confusing of you are not focused and it's fast paced and in your face. And Dacascos is brilliant as well, he doesn't have much lines of texts (thankgod for that!) and his actions and the way it is filmed is truly amazing. The only thing that keeps this movie away from greatness is the lack of good music to go along with the movie. That and the fact that this movie is not about actors, but about pictures and action. But hey, you can't have it all.. I give 7 out of 10.
I had seen the first episode of the anime and was mortified beyond belief on how horribly awful it was - the plot had the potential for depth but what truly vacuous and was basically an excuse to show breasts as much as possible. Sometimes there wasn't even a point, just bare breasts. So gratuitous that even a raging hormones teenage male was disgusted. So my hopes for this film were far from stellar. And I was surprised. Live action did away with gratuitous nudity for a rather rich and fulfilling movie. It was intelligent and it struck me as being infinitely better than the hormone-driven anime. I'd strongly recommend this movie to anyone. The plot is well done and relatively easy to follow, yet still has depth. On a whole, Crying Freeman is a lovely picture, even for people like me who had the misfortune of watching it on DIVX. =)
This was Mark's first movie that i saw and ever since i seen it, ive been a fan of his. This is a very good movie and has some nice action scenes. Im not familiar with the Manga it was based on but it was a great flick nonetheless. Julie Condra is very hot and she is married to Mark in real life. Lucky guy he is. 8/10
i enjoyed this film very much. i hadn't known a film had been made of the comic series and i'm glad i found out. the only thing i found disappointing was the fact that they dubbed Tcheky Karyo's voice over with Ron Perlman's. i don't know why they did that, it kind of ruined that character for me, as i'm a bug Tcheky fan... he's got a great voice and a lot of nuance is lost from the dub-over. both main characters look like they were plucked right out of the comic book. i was pleasantly startled to see the faces of the comic come alive like that. great movie. great entertainment. you'll spend a very satisfying couple hours watching this one. :)
I watched this movie in july and was thrilled by the story and action.Great fighting scenes, great atmosphere and a good performance by Mark Dacascos.I didnt much took notice of him before, but after this i became interested. What i also enjoyed in was Yoko Shimada. She gave a fine performance and was incredibly sexy here. Very interesting movie indeed.Lets hope Dacascos does more stuff like this.
This movie is a handicraft to admire and a truly spectacular action treat in its own original way. First, lets consider that it is not made in Hollywood, and let me say that is probably the reason that this movie is as excellent as it is, otherwise it would have been made casting the most famous actor at the moment, and using excessive explosions and parafernalia. If you haven't seen this one, don't waste another day, it is really worth it, but do not expect the stupid cliches, and colorful pretty waste of Hollywood action movies, this movie is something else, and the acting is superb.
NOT FOR EVERYONE Christophe Gans did the best he can with a very low budget. The Cinematography in this film is just amazing and Highly way too stylized film based on the Japanese manga of the same name. Mark Dacascos is a truly underrated actor, Music in this film is amazing . enjoy this Action flick with good music with style
