Nineteen Eighty-Four
This is an extremely painful film to watch. Of course, the novel makes it so. John Hurt does an excellent job, playing Winston Smith, who works for the government (who doesn't?). He is depressed and has the darkness in his soul of hopelessness. When he find a way out (or so he thinks) he falls in love and they have at least some respite from the tedium. But Richard Burton's character knows how to break people and get them back from their prodigal behavior. I don't know if every moviegoer knew the story going it, but it is certainly a bit of an ordeal watching it, especially the second half. This is much more graphic than its predecessor, but both of them are excellent films.
War is Peace. Freedom is Slavery. Ignorance is Strength. This review was removed by the Thought Police.
adaptation of an iconic novel of the XX century, it is a warning. one of the most persuasive because it discover not only the spirit of a great book, the fears, the future in dark nuances but the structure of a society who easy becomes wrong. and that fact transforms the performances in a sort of revelations. the force of gestures, dialog and tension, the memories about a a literary genre and the memories about the darkness of the XX century. John Hurt gives to his character substance and new nuances, suggestions in the Orwell's novel. Richard Burton reminds the Great Inquesitor in impressive manner. a film about future. its traces are bricks of present. and that is the good side who transforms 1984 in a must see.
Orwell was a prophet. You could change the name to 2021 and just turn on the tv now to witness this live.
