Aikido looks gentle. But is that really the whole story? Jesse Enkamp, better known as “The Karate Nerd,” traveled to Japan to train with Aikido master Ryuji Shirakawa and put their martial arts to the test. Karate and Aikido approach combat very differently. One emphasizes striking and aggressive movement. The other relies heavily on timing, redirection, balance, and control. So what happens when both are tested against realistic attack scenarios? From unarmed attacks and takedown attempts to sudden attacks from behind and simulated weapon threats, Jesse and Shirakawa demonstrate how differently their martial arts respond to the same situations. And along the way, Jesse discovers something he may not have expected: Aikido may look gentle… but that doesn't mean it is simple.
