Masutatsu Oyama built Kyokushin into one of the most powerful and respected karate organizations in the world. His fighters were feared for their toughness. His philosophy demanded absolute discipline. And his mission was simple: create the strongest karate in the world. But behind that extraordinary legacy was a story few people expected. Some of Oyama’s most talented disciples eventually walked away from Kyokushin while he was still alive. Kenji Kurosaki, Hideyuki Ashihara, Tadashi Nakamura, Yoshiji Soeno, Takashi Azuma, and other legendary masters chose to follow their own paths. Some wanted to develop new fighting techniques. Others challenged the organization's philosophy, leadership, or amateur competition system. And several went on to establish martial arts organizations that would influence the future of combat sports. Their departures helped give rise to new fighting systems, including Ashihara Karate, Seido Karate, Shidokan, and Kudo. Their influence also reached the world of professional kickboxing. But here's the surprising part: leaving Kyokushin didn't necessarily mean abandoning their respect for Mas Oyama. So why did his strongest students walk away? And how did their decisions help reshape the martial arts world? This is the untold story of the masters who left Kyokushin—and the legacy they built beyond their teacher.
