Aki Basho 2026 came down to a final-day showdown in Tokyo between Onosato and Aonishiki for the championship. We break down the winners and losers of the September sumo tournament, from the rikishi who climbed the banzuke to the ones whose basho fell apart. Onosato took the yusho at 12-3, while Aonishiki and Fujinokawa shared the runner-up spot at 11-4, a result that puts Fujinokawa's ozeki run firmly in the conversation. Hoshoryu missed the tournament, Kirishima's slide ended his yokozuna hopes, and Hakunofuji and Daieisho struggled in the komusubi slots. Further down, Atamifuji, Kinbozan, Ura and Asanoyama, who stayed in the hunt until the penultimate day, all shaped the race, along with Churanoumi's key win over Fujinokawa Every result here feeds into the next sumo banzuke and sets the stakes for Kyushu Basho 2026, where the ozeki and yokozuna questions will be tested again. On SumoSpirit Channel, we go past the grand sumo highlights to explain what each record means for the months ahead.
