I think this movie rocks! I think it's one of the scariest movies of the year. I just don't get why people hate 'Pulse' so much. But I think I know why. I think people watched the preview, and it seemed like it had a pretty good storyline. And then when they watched the movie, it had a totally different storyline than they thought it would have. I'll admit, when I saw the preview, it did look scarier than the movie. But the preview left a lot of stuff out that the movie didn't have. It's hard to explain, but once you see the movie, you'll know what I mean. 'Pulse' is a very chilling film that is about the dead finding a portal in computers, cell phones, etc., into our world. And because of this plot line, people might get scared of their own computers and cell phones. I think that's a really good way to scare people because instead of 'Pulse' having lots of jump-out-at-you surprises (which by the way, it does), it has a way of scaring people in real life. I'm just surprised they didn't think of televisions as portals for the dead to get through. The only things mentioned and seen in the movie for the dead to get through from were computers and cell phones. 'Pulse' is full of jump-out-at-you scares and other kinds of surprises that make your mouth fly open in shock. Each scare kept eclipsing the last and each thrill kept eclipsing the last, too. All in all, 'Pulse' is a very chilling movie that is well...chilling. Oh, and when you read the back of the DVD, at the end of the summary, it says 'astonishing surprise ending', or something like that, but I know it said surprise ending. Well, the ending isn't really that surprising. But, to see an astonishing ending, read this tips: 1. Go to the special features menu on the 'Pulse' DVD. 2. Go to Deleted/Alternate scenes. (MINOR SPOILER HERE): 3. Go to the 'Dexter Dies' deleted/alternate scene. (MINOR SPOILER ENDS) 4. Enjoy the deleted/alternate surprise ending. I don't know why the filmmakers didn't keep the scene there. The ending would have been so much better. Pulse was not the worst horror flick I've seen but it was far from the best. For her first horror film Kristen Bell did a great job. As did Ian Somerhalder. The rest of the cast seemed to be lacking quite a bit. Honestly when the whole thing was over and done with the only characters I felt were worth anything were Mattie and Dex. The others were all so blah, its hard to care about them. Ron Rifkin played his part quite well, even though we're never really sure what his character's purpose is. From what I gathered he is some kind of psychologist or something that is around to tell Mattie shes imaginging things. Then when his computer asks him if he wants to see a ghost it shows some woman who he has framed on his desk. Who the hell is this woman? And who the hell is he?! I know I shouldn't nitpick but damn they could give us a little back story! The ending was the best part of this film. I was completely fooled. I thought Dex would install the virus that would kill the server the ghosts are coming through on just in time and it would actually work and the world will be saved. I think its pretty neat that they took it in a different direction than most horror movies. However, I left the thing feeling a little disappointed. This movie had some great potential, but I think they ruined it on focusing too much on world destruction rather than the characters.

I went to see this movie yesterday with a couple of friends. Lets start off by saying this was a movie that Dimension (studio that should not make horror movies) had cut down over 30 minutes of footage to make it pg-13 which supposedly equals more money. Anyway the movie was actually well done. The atmosphere was really dark, the lighting really good, make-up, and visuals were awesome. If you like the Ring or the Grudge, you should definitely watch this. If you like gore, maybe this isn't your thing. I'm into the more atmospheric, visual, and sound of a movie, so this thing freaked me out. Don't pass it up, though. I can't wait for a directors cut when it comes out on DVD. To summarize it up, I enjoyed it, give it a chance. Oh and props to Kristen Bell and Christina Millian. They did a pretty damn good job in this movie.

Beyond the fact that PULSE is based on an Asian film, it also plays like a cross between THE RING and THE GRUDGE. And the lead actress, Kristen Bell, bears a strong resemblance to Sarah Michelle Gellar and Naomi Watts, which is not the worst thing in the world. Anyhow, beings from another dimension are breaking through into our world via electronic signals. They may be ghosts, they may be aliens, and then again they may be something entirely different, like the creatures in EVENT HORIZON. The apparitions are scary, but the death scenes involve an energy transference, so there's no blood or gore and this is rated PG-13. The CGI work is outstanding, especially in suggesting the rot these creatures spread everywhere as they enter our world. In the end, though, this is a kids' film, with one teen/young adult after another being knocked off in fairly quick succession. In this way, PULSE proved a disappointment. SILENT HILL, with its similar theme of alternate realities/dimensions, was actually more entertaining -- and SILENT HIll was nothing to write home about. Bell is attractive but has a way to go as an actress. She'll get there.

This movie was so incredibly bad, it was actually funny. By the midway point of the movie, everyone in the theater was laughing hysterically at how bad it was. People were actually calling out what was going to happen because this movie was so badly made and so predictable. This movie sucked so hard, I actually recommend it to young writers and directors so they can see how a movie is NOT to be done. In fact, I recommend it to everyone, if you want to see the best comedy of the summer, look out Ricky Bobby. The crowning moment was when two senior citizens, who were also taking shots at this awful movie, announced they were leaving to try and get their money back.

This film is like the American version of The Ring. It has atmosphere which a lot of horror/thriller/psychological-horror-thrillers don't have and it is used nicely here. The actors did a great job with there roles, mind you this isn't a Oscar winning film. The sound effects and music add to the bizarre, eerie, and strangeness of the film. This film had a good story about how we(modern America/world)use technology and isolate ourselves and basically self-destroy ourselves for using texts, internet, television etc. And the special effects were good. I've seen so many horror films that this wasn't scary at all for me but it could be different for you and it did build tension especially when there's the "Fake climax" scene which happens right after Mattie gets off the elevator. And Wes Cravens uses Dramatic Irony in the very begging with josh which is an odd and successful effect to put to use in a horror film. The cinematography is good and editing is in top notch firm. Go see this good American remake film. Pulse: You are now infected. There were some frequencies we were never meant to find. 10/10.

I was fortunate enough to see the original 2001 Japanese movie Pulse(Kairo) But I was also lucky enough to see his earlier films the best being Kyua (1997) (Cure). His films tend be abstract set pieces dealing with complex human emotion, in the original Pulse the central theme was extreme isolation and loneliness, suddenly people you cared about were disappearing and the world was ending. Basically everything I've just written summarized the entire experience of the original film. But then how did all that change? Enter Wes Craven, who after making this film is clearly out of touch to what makes a good modern horror film. He literally took out all the abstract surreal spookiness that made the original good and did what any cliché director would do. He used Expositing like it was going out of style, he explained Everything. Then when you do that, you basically end up a with a pointless special FX boo driven nonsense. Craven will be the kiss of death for modern horror. (For the record: Kiyoshi Kurosawa did not take part in the screenplay process, if pay close attention to the opening credits it was Wes Craven and another writer.)

Let me start by saying that I have not seen the Decent yet so I couldn't say that it is better than Pulse obviously. But for someone who is a big fan of these Japanese horror turned into an American film, movies, this is another great one. If your a fan of The Ring, The Grudge, and (not a Japanese Film) Donnie Darko, then you should see this movie. I wasn't honestly expecting it to be as good as it was. It was completely UN-cliché to the endings of most teen horror flicks. The story was great and the acting wasn't that bad. If the acting had been better this would have got a 10. Note to all horror fans - GO SEE THIS!!
