جونز رجل وسيم مصاب بمرض يتسبب له في فترات من المتعة الشديدة، وفترات أخرى من الاكتئاب والرغبة في الانتحار. أثناء حضوره لحفل موسيقي، يقفز فجأة ويعتلي خشبة المسرح أثناء عزف السيمفونية التاسعة لبيتهوفن، ويقوم بفعل مشين، تلقي السلطات القبض علىه، وتوصي بذهابه للعلاج يذهب جونز إلى إحدى المصحات النفسية، حيث تبدي الطبيبة إليزابيث اهتمامها بحالته، لكنها سرعان ما تجد نفسها واقعة في غرامه.
