On August 17, 2004, at the Peristeri Olympic Boxing Hall in Athens, Greece, Cuban southpaw Guillermo “Rigo” Rigondeaux began his campaign to secure a historic second consecutive Olympic gold. His opponent in the opening bout of the bantamweight (54 kg) tournament was Liu Yuan of China. From the first bell, Rigondeaux’s world-class defensive skills, lightning-quick counter-punching, and fluid footwork were on full display. He dominated the exchanges, landing sharp jabs and overhand lefts, building a comfortable lead early on. Liu struggled to find any rhythm, and Rigondeaux's clean technique and ring IQ shone through. He secured a decisive points victory, winning 21–7, advancing smoothly to the next round. This match set the tone for Rigondeaux’s flawless Olympic run in Athens. It highlighted his mastery of amateur boxing ‒ outstanding reflexes, accuracy, and tactical awareness ‒ that would eventually lead to facing top-tier opponents like Worapoj Petchkoom and earning gold. His performance in this bout remains a classic example of Rigo’s brilliance at the top of the amateur ranks. 📍 Date: August 17, 2004 📍 Location: Peristeri Olympic Boxing Hall, Athens, Greece 🏅 Event: Men’s Bantamweight (54 kg), Round of 32 🔥 Relive the technique, precision, and dominance of one of the greatest amateur fighters ever.
