Shawn''s 1997 was filled with ups and downs, from winning the belt in January to dropping it after "losing his smile". After WrestleMania 13 Shawn's rivalry with Bret Hart would get seriously heated up when the two had a backstage fight that would lead to HBK asking for his release, but Shawn would end up returning to the company where he feuded with Steve Austin briefly before resuming his rivalry with The Hitman and The Hart Foundation. Towards the end of the year Shawn formed the D-Generation X stable along with Triple H and Chyna, and Shawn would get caught up in the most controversial wrestling match in history at the 1997 Survivor Series.
