أثناء الحرب الأهلية اﻷمريكية، تتوطد علاقة الضابط دونبار بالهنود الحمر كثيرًا، كما يتعرف على امرأة شقراء ترعرعت في كنف الهنود، يدرك دونبار بأن الهنود جديرون بالإحترام، ولهم الحق في البقاء على الأراضي وهم السكان الأصليون، كما يقرر أن يكمل حياته بعيدًا عن المدنية، ناسيًا أصوله البيضاء.
