I watched this movie for the first time because I love Sylvester Stallone and it was a great, intense action movie. No action movies come close to this these days.
This run-of-mill actioner has all the basic cliché ingredients of the genre but is set apart by its unique isolated setting and some amazing stunt-work. The typical 90's action aesthetic is it play here, that of a fallen anti-hero protagonist who, traumatised by a passed event, comes back to save the day. This coupled with your typical trigger-happy bad guys, unpredictable head psycho, characteristic female moral conscious and the right hand man who was once your friend offers a predictable premise. But the set-pieces and spectacular scenery shine through and throw in some great one-liners then you have a pretty entertaining night in with some beers. 7/10
This is one of those cliched tortured hero movies. But it is set in all places in the snowy mountains of someplace USA. The acting is great all around. Jon Lithgow as the villain is terrific. Of course the setting lines things up for people to get knocked off in spectacular ways and the movie doesn't disappoint. From a midair robbery to a punch fight on the side of a helicopter that is hanging off a mountain this movie has all the cornball action you could want. It's not one of Stallone's better action movies (Tango and Cash for all times!) but I found it highly entertaining. If you like other Stallone action movies like Rambo, Tango and Cash then this one will do just fine.
Cliffhanger is an excellent action thriller with thrilling action sequences and great performances from Sylvester Stallone and Michael Rooker. John Lithgow is perfect as the villain. Renny Harlin's direction is great and the musical score works really well. However, there are a few generic and familiar plot elements.
Oh, what a bad, bad, very bad movie! Cowritten by and starring Sylvester Stallonethat should have been enoughand featuring too many rock-climbing scenes, vertigo, falling, and scene-chewing villains and a botched airborne heist. There are two plots, both lame. One involves a traumatic failed rescue, and the other involves bad people wrecking an airplane for booty, and killing various harmless people whenever possible. The usually reliable John Lithgow, perhaps depressed by the sheer awfulness of the product, is reduced to sneering and calling those for whom he doesn't care "Bostid!" in a vague approximation of an English accent. Janine Turner, who was sprightly and enigmatic when she played Maggie on Northern Exposure, is sadly wasted in the part of a rescue climber and pilot. Stallone is stolid and muscle-headed. No deathless lines in this one. No living lines, either.
Goofy, fun action. A smart script but poorly executed. Still worth watching considering all the other action films out there? Not really.
I love this movie. It was one of the biggest hits in Czech republic after the revolution and everybody loved it. Sure there are things to complain about, but I'm not going to do that. Fun note, this movie actually initiated my love for Spyderco knives and made me the avid collector I'm today.
I first saw this movie on vhs in the early 2000s and enjoyed it very much. It has been a staple of pay tv as well as heavy rotation on TV and now that it's on Hulu, give it a shot. Sylvester Stallone plays a mountain climber on a mission to save his family from evil terror and there's explosions and action and everything in between. Made on a budget of $65 million and nearly triple grossing it worldwide and spawning videogames which weren't as good as the movie as well as a memorable soundtrack and advertising campaign, this hit film inspired a wave of copycats, including Vertical Limit. Hang on!!!
