Well I am actually just 30 minutes into the movie so far but I would NOT say it is a comedy - more drama/thriller. And if it's like this in most armies of the world we should definitively not sleep too well. So far not funny unless one finds high strung and drugged service men driving over civilians and so forth funny! Anyway - why the movie is categorized as a comedy must be due to some people's need to make the movie less political in these times of conflict. Especially since the US forces are supposed UHM to be the good guys. As I usually say - thanks GOD they are on our side. (NOT THAT THAT USUALLY HELPS AS THEY ARE DAMN GOOD AT FRIENDLY FIRE FOR REAL TOO).

This was an OK movie, at best, outside the context of the book. But having read and enjoyed the book quite a bit it was a real disappointment in comparison. I don't recall ever seeing a movie that took so many liberties, large and small, with the book that inspired it. For example, the Hawaii "happy" ending at the conclusion was absurd and a bit of Hollywood in the worst sense. And the portrayal of Stoney was a complete joke relative to the badass he was in the book. The book was so much deeper, nuanced and philosophical (even beyond the usual book/movie dichotomy), you got a much better feel for, and understanding of, the time and place depicted in the movie. In comparison the movie was flat and felt phoned in. The cast was OK, some decent actors but nobody doing their best work. If you want to have any hope of enjoying the movie, DO NOT read the book first.

I kick myself for watching trash like this. It is sad that a major hollywood studio would release something that insults and reflects poorly on American armed forces. I'm a veteran and found the movie to be not funny and just another hollywood lie.

I am currently serving in the US Army, and I can say with out a doubt that this is a very good movie. The acting in my opinion is very believable, although the story is hard to swallow. But the actors portrayed very believable soldiers, some of the characters in the movie act a lot like some of my buddies in my platoon. And the top, hell, he acts and talks and even looks like my 1st Sgt. This movie is very believable in the sense that it looks and feels real. I maybe nit picking, but one thing that bothers me about any movie concerning the US Army is if they get things right, like uniforms, equipment etc…etc… and well this at least to me seems so spot on, it makes me wonder if we gave support to this movie via technical, and equipment.

I thought this movie was hilarious with a very good story to it. Joaquin Phoenix is a wonderful actor, and did a great job at making Buffalo Soldiers that good. I think ppl with a kind of sick sense of humor should see it. I can't wait for the dvd. :)

This film reminds me of really good teen movies from the mid 80's. But it's not really good. It's a decent enough watch. Great cast. I particularly liked Ed Harris. Never saw him play this type of character before. However, in the last half hour, it went from a 7 to a 5. If interested, you should watch this movie.

I don't understand who exactly could put such a low rating on this movie as a lot of reviewers have done, I just got back from watching JP's Oscar worthy performance in Joker, so I stopped by to see what rating this has, I'm surprised it's so low, it's one of my favourite movies I watched in my teens, I think if you enjoyed Joker and you want to watch more JP, you'll get a good insight to the 90's movies with this if you weren't old enough to remember it. A really well made movie, sure it's no action block buster but it's perfectly entertaining throughout, and captures a feeling of the times, well worth a watch.

It is a movie with a very good cast and ideas that entertain until the end. The main problem is that it would be unthinkable to imagine such a realistic film if it were really reality, and therefore like all things that are not possible, it is a film of illusions and distorted...

This is a very strange movie, and the three year tour in Germany in the late 70s combined with my father's immediate post war stories, make me feel that little in this movie was unbelievable. Parts may have been grossly exaggerated, but as an acquaintance said recently, "In Germany, it could happen". I guess there has always been a somewhat uneasy relationship between the Germans and the US Army. Saying that the Old Army (pre 1980) was a bunch of choir boys would be a lie. We were a bunch of hard living individuals and the terrible exchange rate there really did lead to certain activities. The army has changed a lot since then, when I first joined we were looked down upon by civilians, now your treated like some hero. A sequel would be difficult to believe, a prequel on the other hand could make this look like a Kindergarten movie

I have been waiting for a really long time to see this movie. The release date was delayed by a million and one things happening in America and then again by the political climate over there and now, finally, us Brits can view it in all its glory. This film is one of the best films I have seen in a really long time. It was great from start to finish, it didn't sag under any storylines, it didn't fall down with character development or over-the-top action sequences, it was as close to perfection as you're likely to get at the moment. Joaquin Phoenix has never been better, he was born to play this role. A totally likeable, typical anti-hero. Scott Glenn shone which is saying something (I don't usually like him) and I have never seen Ed Harris give a more believable performance. And it was so different to his usual roles... All in all, it was funny, shocking, sexy and dazzling. Well worth the wait.
